A Fond Farewell
Transcript

"Epilogue: A Fond Farewell" is the twelfth and final special episode for Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Phoenix Wright, Hershel Layton, Maya Fey, Luke Triton, and Espella Cantabella return to Layton's Office from their trip to Labyrinthia, and prepare to go their separate ways once again.

Development notes[]

For the final episode, the main characters discuss several aspects of the game's development:

  • Due to the large differences in character designs between the Professor Layton and Ace Attorney series, the main characters' designs had to be adjusted for consistency. Professor Layton and Luke Triton were made taller, while Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey were made shorter.
  • There were many different ideas as to how to portray the "vs." aspect of the game. The courtroom battle in The Last Inquisitor and The First Story was one realization of this theme, and the team puzzle in Secrets of the Underground Ruins came from the perspective of pitting the team against the puzzles. One scene that did not make it into the final game was of the two protagonists engaging in a fencing match. The development teams from Capcom and Level-5 would also be competitive toward each other in a way.

Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright then tackle one final puzzle before everyone says farewell one last time.

References to other media[]

  • When Maya Fey asks Phoenix Wright what his finishing catchphrase in a fight would be, he briefly thinks then responds that it would be something like, "It's time to pay for your crimes!" This is likely a reference to Wright's Level 3 Hyper Combo: "Ace Attorney" in the crossover fighting game Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. During this attack, Wright accuses his opponent until they breakdown, with his lines during it being, "The one who actually committed the crime... is you! No alibi, no justice, no dreams, no hope. It's time to pay for your crimes! Take that!"

Special gallery quotes[]

Barnham and Darklaw[]

"These versions of Barnham and Darklaw briefly appear in the ending. Freed from their inner demons and their responsibilities in Labyrinthia, they look cheerful and refreshed."

Phoenix Close-Up (2012-05)[]

"Appears at the start of cross-examination. We mostly use a 3D model, so only the eyes from this illustration are shown in that animation."

Barnham Close-Up[]

"Barnham's proud face. His sharp gaze betrays the playfully mischievous nature of an attractive, sporty prosecutor."

Darklaw Close-Up (2012-07-16)[]

"High Inquisitor Darklaw. She's wearing a golden gauntlet, like her father. I was very keen on her claw slam motion. This is just the top half of the picture."

Bonus[]

"For some time, we were planning to have Edgeworth and Butz in Labyrinthia, too... Alas, that idea had to be scrapped, like so many other things we've come up with!"

Wait, there's more![]

"This was only a cursory introduction to our designs, intended to give you some insight into the design process of Labyrinthia! I hope you enjoyed it! Cheers!"
