Basically, we have the following options in my eyes:

Hold out for an official translation

  • 2013-2014 has been a fantastic couple of years for the series: Dual Destinies, PL vs. PW, the announcement of 1 or 2 new games being developed, and the HD re-release for the 3DS. Part of me still thinks that a digital release version of AAI2 isn't an impossibility with the recent ports and re-releases of old games. However, saying that, it's notable that only the old trilogy has enjoyed this treatment, with AJ and AAI being ignored (surely sticking them into the e-shop would be a piece of piss and cost Capcom very little). If they aren't going to do it with old games that they have translations of, then maybe seeing AAI2 someday is just naive. I dunno.

Set ourselves a date to give up

  • I'm starting to lean towards this to be honest. Maybe by the end of this year or at the start of February next year (since that would be four years since its release) we should just bow to the inevitable.

Figure out a compromise

  • Not sure how to go about this. Maybe something with mouse-over text? (e.g., (Simon Keyes)). However, I feel that's all I ever say when it comes to these sorts of things (here comes Strabo and his mouse-over text talk again *sigh*).

Status quo

  • Or we could just keep on keeping on. I wouldn't be too fussed by this personally, since I'm pretty used to the names we use at the moment (though that is a pretty selfish point of view). But it does feel like we're being needlessly resistant to the rest of the AA community...

Out of curiosity, has a decision been made about this yet? I ask this because it's been about four years since these options were proposed. In that time, it's now been seven years since Investigations 2 was released on DS, and February 3 of next year will mark the eighth year since its release. There's also been an iOS/Android re-release of it in December 2017. Despite the releases of main series games such as Dual Destinies, Spirit of Justice and the HD re-releases of the original trilogy, Investigations and Apollo Justice, as far as I am aware not a word has been spoken by Capcom about a localized release for Investigations 2.

I guess the above talk page post and the page proper were pretty much the last word anyone put in on the matter. There used to be some editors on other talk pages who were pretty adamant about not using the unofficial localized names at all. I don't know if there would be a lot of opposition to it now. At the same time, is it worth changing? capefeather (talk) 01:41, November 19, 2018 (UTC)
Well, the original compromise was a "placeholder" system where the original Japanese name was placed where a "hypothetical" English localized name could be placed, which has led to a weird mix of canons. Given that the localization explicitly takes place in Los Angeles, it really clashes between the localized and non-localized content continuity when seen from an in-universe perspective. I get why people were hesitant about the unofficial names back then, and I probably would've been one of those as well, but it's been almost eight years now. I think the reality of the situation has been made clear. For the sake of in-universe continuity and given the lack of contact from Capcom, I think the idea should be at least re-considered.

It would probably be fine to change them at this point. I'd say the thing stopping people from doing it now is that it would be a considerable amount of busywork. Or a bot, I guess. capefeather (talk) 02:28, November 27, 2018 (UTC)
I can get started on it. Aeliren (talk) 18:32, November 30, 2018 (UTC)
I figured that if we're going ahead with using the unofficial names, perhaps a separate top-of-the-page template might be better? Something like this maybe?
This article contains information from the unofficial English translation patch for Gyakuten Kenji 2.

That looks pretty good to me. On a similar subject, should we stick to simply changing the names, or should we also change sprites and images when applicable (ex: the newspaper on Di-Jun Huang, the article on John Marsh, the Piece of Cake title card, Nicole Swift and Karin Jenson's sprites, etc.)?
