Altamont Gas Company was an influential Londonese gas distribution company in the 19th century. Namely headed by Augustus Altamont, but essentially being actually directed by his wife Quinby Altamont, the company provided methane gas for home heating to a good chunk of London's citizens, issueing specially made, allegedly burglar-proof Gas Meters to the people contracting them; the citizens just had to put coins into the machine, thusly paying their hourly quota for the gas, then periodicly one of their workers, such as Adron B. Metermann would visit their homes to collect the payment, and also do maintenance when necessary.
Unfortunately for them, William Shamspeare, an inhabitant of Garrideb house's lodgings, had come up with a trick to deceive the Gas Meter: having beforehand punched a hole in the bottom of the coin container of the meter, Shamspeare just had to insert ice-made coins, created with a near perfect mold carved in a Bar of Soap, to get all the free gas he wanted, the hole ensuring that the water from the melted ice would drain completely, leaving no trace of the deception. As it wasn't bad enough, Shamspeare would also use Altamont's gas for his nefarious purposes: by partially disassembling the gas-powered light installed on the wall separating his own room with the adjacent one, and then blowing hard in the tube, Shamspeare would repeatedly cause the pivot flame heating said room to go out, letting the deadly, unlit methane gas fill the space, his objective to either kill its occupants or make them flee, in order to claim the room for himself and find the treasure hid away by the criminal Selden. These actions had already caused the death of the previous occupant, Duncan Ross, and also came close to claim the current occupant's life, Soseki Natsume, multiple times.
Adron B. Metermann, the employee appointed to collect the payment from Garrideb's lodgings, would constantly fight with Shamspeare, disassembling and reassembling the gas meter over-and-over again in order to find the trick behind the absence of coins, but said stratagem wasn't discovered until it was pointed out by Ryunosuke Naruhodo, the defense attorney defending Soseki Natsume from Shamspeare's mistaken accusation of attempted murder, the young lawyer also discovering Shamspeare's murderous use of the gas.

Development[]
The overall theme surrounding Altamont Gas Company is modelled after the internal workings of a bee hive: the gas itself is parallel to honey, while the coins provided by the Londoneers would be the flower pollen steadily collected by the worker bees, AKA the company workers; the uniform of the employees themselves greatly reminds of a bee's look, while the attire and general demeanor of Quinby Altamont, the de-facto leader of the company but in name, is reminiscent of the stereotypical behavior of a queen bee.
