On the day of the murders, Dick Gumshoe was assigned to guard duty in the District Court hallway while Byrne and Rell were in Defendant Lobby No. 2. He pooled the $5 from his recent bonus payment alongside the $1 that Byrne's daughter Kay had, in order to buy a Swiss Roll. In order to do so, however, Kay went to the 3rd Floor Lobby and asked Miles Edgeworth for a $1 bill in exchange for her $1 in loose change. Edgeworth eventually found out about Gumshoe's bonus and figured out why Kay had asked him for a $1 bill.
