An awl was a piece of evidence in Athena Cykes's investigation into the murder of Constance Courte. Belonging to Themis Legal Academy, said awl was one of the props in the mock trial during the school's festival. When Professor Courte was found dead after said mock trial, the awl was initially thought to have been the murder weapon.

In actuality, Professor Aristotle Means had planted Courte's blood on the awl and left it in the school's art room. His aim in doing so was to make it seem that the art room had been the crime scene and that Juniper Woods was responsible for Courte's death, as she was in charge of the props for the mock trial; in reality, the true crime scene was the outdoor stage and Means was the culprit. Woods did not suspect anything at the time when she saw the bloody awl, believing it to be merely paint, as Courte had always insisted that the props be realistic. However, she was soon arrested for Courte's murder when the police searched her and found the awl in her pocket.
However, Woods' defense attorney, Athena Cykes, revealed in court that the real murder weapon had been Means' staff, thus discrediting the awl as evidence and proving Means to be Courte's real killer.
