Around the time of Espella Cantabella's first trial, Birdly began to grow in popularity to the point that the current town minstrel, Bardly, considered him to be an unbeatable rival.

Birdly was present in front of the late Newton Belduke's house with Primstone when they heard a scream coming from inside, and so rushed in with Luke Triton and Emeer Punchenbaug. In the alchemist's study, they found that Hershel Layton had been turned to gold, with Maya Fey nearby holding a Talea Magica. The witnesses deduced that she had cast the Goldor spell on the professor, and so accused her of being a witch.

Birdly was then called to the Witches' Court with the other witnesses to testify about the crime. The minstrel mostly sang his testimony while playing his lute. Later, his parrot Cracker was called to testify about what events happened at which time, as the bird was able to vividly "play-back" the sounds at the time of the crime. During the second half of the trial, Punchenbaug recruited Birdly to be his personal bard.

After the trial, Birdly's popularity continued to grow, much to Bardly's despair.

Name[]

  • His Japanese name "Ferumata" (フェルマタ) is a play on "fermata", which is a musical notation used to indicate that a note should be held for longer than normal.
  • His English name is a play on both "bird" (in reference to his pet parrot) and the name of Birdly's self-proclaimed rival, Bardly.
  • "Allégorio", his name in the French localization, is a play on both the French for "allegory" (allégorie) and the musical term "allegro" (music played in a quick, lively tempo).
  • "Walewijn", his name in the Dutch localization, is a play on "Boudewijn", Bardly's Dutch name. It may also come from "Walwein", one of the alternative names of Gawain, one of the Knights of the Round Table in Arthurian legend.
  • His German name, "Paparotti", is a portmanteau of "Papagei" ("parrot") and Luciano Pavarotti.
  • His Italian name refers to a kind of classical Greek singer.
