A burnt letter was a piece of evidence in Phoenix Wright's investigation into the murder of Misty Fey.

The plan to end the main family[]
Morgan Fey wrote the letter with instructions for her youngest daughter Pearl to find for when her older half-sister Dahlia Hawthorne is executed for her crimes. Along with the letter, there was a picture of Dahlia so Pearl would know what her face and name so she could channel her. The plan was that Pearl convince Maya to visit Hazakura Temple under the guise of spiritual training, and after lights out Pearl would channel Dahlia, and she would kill her cousin Maya, the last known member of the Fey clan's main family and soon to be the next Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, so Pearl can be the next Master as she is the most powerful branch family member, and to regain her family's status and Morgan's honor.
A year after Morgan's incarceration, she was transferred to the same detention center as Dahlia. As they were mother and daughter, they were allowed to visit each other now and then with ease. After telling Dahlia what she had planned, while disgusted, Dahlia agreed to doing so as she wanted to harm Maya's older sister Mia's soul for putting her on death row. She was executed soon afterwards. Pearl was also allowed to visit Morgan due to the same reasons, and Morgan told her about the letter and Hazakura Temple. She told her it was for the good of the main family, so she agreed to it, not knowing about her mother's true intentions.
Prosecutor Godot used his position to overhear their conversation and headed to Kurain Village before Pearl could find the letter. Opening the envelope, he realized Maya was in danger of getting killed. Instead of destroying the letter before Pearl could find it, he put it back. Seeing as his chance to save her, as he projected his feeling that he failed to save his girlfriend Mia from getting murdered by Redd White onto her and Wright, he came up with a counterplan.
He was able to locate the exiled Master, Misty Fey, and the two decided to have Misty channel Dahlia and Godot tie her up. She went to Hazakura Temple and told the head nun, Bikini, that the main family is in danger, aware that the Temple's duty is to protect the main family. Pearl found the note, but noticed the seal was torn, and brought it with her to Hazakura Temple. As "Elise Deuxnim" Misty met her daughter Maya for the first time since the DL-6 Incident, and her niece Pearl. Pearl revealed she isn't a good reader and had Misty help her read the letter, specifically the words "gravely" and "roast." After lights out, Pearl went to the Sacred Cavern and channel Dahlia, but failed for the fist time since Misty channeled her first. As she didn't understand what gravely and roast actually meant in a metaphorical way, she took it in a literal approach, thinking it meant the roast and gravy from dinner, and splashed gravy on the hanging scroll. She later burned the letter afterwards.
Dick Gumshoe later found the half-burned letter and gave it to Wright. He confronted Pearl about the letter, along with the fact Dahlia was executed, helped him realize that the second "Iris" was her twin sister channeled.
