Cecil is an easily upset young boy living in Labyrinthia. He can normally be seen holding hands with his rather irritable sister Petal.

The professor's arrival

Main article: Mysterious Labyrinthia

Hershel Layton and Luke Triton's first meeting with Cecil and Petal was almost immediately after they entered Labyrinthia's walls. The two newcomers overheard the siblings arguing, with Cecil openly declaring that he wanted to join the town's order of knights and Petal telling him that he was too weak to join. Upon meeting Layton and Triton, they produced a puzzle to test their skills.

Separation and reunion

Main article: The Great Witch

The day after Espella Cantabella's first witch trial, Cecil became separated from Petal, leaving her worried about him. He was eventually found by Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey, who were searching for him after being requested to do so by his sister. At first Cecil was skeptical, as he felt that he shouldn't talk to strangers. However, when Wright and Fey turned to leave and let the patrolling knights find Cecil, the young boy quickly changed his mind and gave the pair a puzzle, saying that he would believe them if they solved it. Having gained Cecil's trust, Wright and Fey soon had the siblings reunited. Upon their reunion, he was scolded by Petal for becoming separated from her so easily, and he in turn promised not to leave her side again.

Personality

Cecil is a timid young boy often prone to tears, with his timidity being even more obvious when compared to Petal. Although Cecil harbors ambitions of someday proving himself by becoming a knight and protecting his sister, she is often quick to scold him on how impossible these dreams are due to his weak nature. If he wishes to test the character of someone else, he will do so with a puzzle, and will trust those who can solve them.

Name

  • His Japanese name "Teru" is a reference to the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel"; when his name is combined with that of his sister ("Gure"), it becomes "Gureteru" (グレテル), which is the Japanese spelling of "Gretel".
  • "Cecil" may be intended to be a play on "Hansel", thereby continuing the naming theme used in the Japanese version.
  • The German localization also uses the "Hansel and Gretel" theme by naming the brother and sister "Hänschen" and "Greta", respectively.
  • His Dutch name, "Doetje", can mean "wuss" or "a very naive person". It's also similar to "Grietje", the Dutch name for "Gretel".
