A chess diagram was a piece of evidence in Miles Edgeworth's investigation into Bronco Knight's murder. It later reappeared as correspondence chess diagram in Edgeworth's investigation into the murder of Di-Jun Wang.

Knight's murder []

Main article: The Captive Turnabout

Prior to his death, Knight played chess with Simeon Saint even after being detained in a holding cell in the detention center. Unbeknownst to him, Mr. Saint had secretly made him play against Bodhidharma Kanis as part of his plan for revenge.

Later, Edgeworth found the memo in Knight's cell. He soon deduced that Kanis had to been playing chess against Knight, as the positions matched with the chessboard in Kanis's maximum security cell, with it being a mere coincidence being extremely unlikely on account of the thousands of possible chess piece combinations. He later used it to prove that there was a connection between Knight and Kanis, namely, the fact that they were correspondence chess opponents. Later, he used it to show that Warden Fifi Laguarde would have seen a connection between Knight and Kanis, as she had been checking Kanis's mail and would've seen the fact that the two men were playing chess against each other.

Wang's murder []

Edgeworth added the memo to his organizer after Kanis told him that he played correspondence chess with the mastermind. Afterwards, he used it to show the contradiction between Kanis's claim that the letters were in braille and the memo: the memo had not been written in braille. This revealed the existence of a middleman who had translated the letters. Later, he used it to show the connection of the mastermind to the case.

Note[]

In Knight's response, a rook in f8 is missing. All other pieces, except the pawn he had moved, are in the same positions.

The game position depicted on the memo is identical to one reached by an exhibition match from 2002.[1] That match ends with White resigning after 68 moves. Knight, who plays White, was killed after this position was reached.
