"Court is Now in Session" (開廷), also known as "Court Begins", is a title for several pieces of background music in the Ace Attorney series. These tracks normally play during the beginning of a trial before any witness testimony is given, as well as at the end of a trial. They could be considered the character themes of the various judges of the series.

Translation history[]

Mock Court Battle

The beginning of the mock trial in Turnabout Academy in the Japanese version of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies. The word 開廷 can be seen.

The "Court Begins" name originated as an unofficial fanmade translation. Starting with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, a trial intro scene was introduced, with the word 開廷 kaitei – the title of the trial theme – included. The English localization changed this graphic to read, "Court Is Now In Session / All Rise". The following year, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was released outside of Japan, and used the "Court Begins" translation for its in-game soundtrack, found among the Bonuses accessible from a completed save file. Starting with the Steam release of Gyakuten Saiban Sound BOX in 2019, the "Court is Now in Session" translation has been used.
