The Crystal Tower was a tall glass tower built for the Great Exhibition, similarly to the Crystal Palace from the 1851 Great Exhibition (which was also considered to be turned into a tower) and the Eiffel Tower from the Exposition Universelle of 1889. It contained observation platforms, a botanical garden, an art gallery, a zoo, and a museum. It was called Suishoutou in Japanese. Placed about 25 yards away was the experimentation stage for Albert Harebrayne's instantaneous kinesis demonstration, where he attempted to beam Odie Asman to the second floor of the tower.

Demonstration gone wrong[]

For the demonstration, Asman entered a wooden cage (specifically from Chamaecyparis obtusa, also known as hinoki cypress). When Harebrayne started up the machine for the demonstration, it started generating smoke before exploding. The cage seemingly reappeared 30 feet above its intended destination and fell to the floor below. Asman was later found inside, dead. His spine had been broken, and he had sustained a fatal wound to the heart, its shape consistent with Harebrayne's flat-head screwdriver.

Note[]

If the buildings in the background are examined from the experimentation stage, Iris Wilson says the following during a discussion about Japan: "I'd present a particularly steely samurai with a present of one of Hurley's stories I'd written especially, and see if I couldn't get Hurley into a jam against some bartitsu-master ninjas!"
