A damage animation is an animation displayed typically displayed by a protagonist, witness or rival when a flaw or contradiction in their testimony or argument is pointed out. Unlike breakdowns, damage animations are short and usually occur multiple times within a trial, often in rapid succession.

A list of damage animations in the Ace Attorney series follows.

Phoenix Wright — As a rookie attorney, his eyes briefly appear completely white as his mouth gapes in shock. As a veteran attorney, he jumps up with his mouth gaping in shock before coming back down, his eyes turning completely white.
Maya Fey — As a teenager, she brings her arms down in shock. As an adult, she brings her arms up and rears back in shock.
Miles Edgeworth — Brings his arms up and rears back in shock.
Pearl Fey — Brings her hand to her mouth with a shocked expression as her hair bounces up.
Franziska von Karma — Clutches herself and shakes in shock.
Apollo Justice — Rears back in shock while his horns fly up and then fall down.
Ema Skye — As an adult, she jumps in shock with her hand on her face.
Athena Cykes — Squeezes her face with both palms. While she does this, Widget often shows a "surprised" or "sad" expression.
Simon Blackquill — Reacts as though he were slashed by an invisible sword.
Winston Payne — Rears back in shock. In Turnabout Memories his pompadour flies up and separates. In Turnabout Trump, his hair stays in place for a second before falling.
Gaspen Payne — Brings his arm up and rears back in shock, his toupee flying half off. In The Foreign Turnabout his crown also slides halfway off.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Frank Sahwit — Brings his arms up in shock while his toupee bounces up.
Redd White — Raises his head up with a shocked expression, leaving his arms on the stand.
Wendy Oldbag — Brings her shoulders up with a shocked expression.
Sal Manella — Flinches back in shock, causing his fat to jiggle and sweat to fly.
Cody Hackins — Pulls a shocked expression.
Dee Vasquez — Flinches and bares her teeth in her first animation. Lowers her pipe with a shocked expression on her face in her second animation.
Lotta Hart — Rears her head back in shock.
Manfred von Karma — Punches the desk with his left arm, before raising it to his right arm and letting out a scream.
Angel Starr — Raises her arms with a shocked expression, as her lunches fly up from her basket and fall back down.
Mike Meekins — Pulls his left hand upwards and accidentally gets it caught in his handcuffs, causing him to briefly choke on the lanyard tied to them.
Jake Marshall — Grabs the part of his chest where his heart is so hard that his poncho suddenly waves.
Damon Gant — Becomes "electrified" as if he had been struck by lightning. Notably, his damage animation is rather long and is used in a manner similar to how a breakdown animation is normally used; however, his actual breakdown animation occurs later.
Lana Skye — Bites down on her thumb so hard that she draws blood.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All

Richard Wellington — Pulls on his scarf, choking himself.
Mimi Miney — Pulls her beret over her head, causing an impression of her face to appear through the fabric.
Benjamin Woodman — The head and limbs of his puppet "Trilo Quist" fly off.
Moe — Rears back in shock as his hat flies off.
Adrian Andrews — Her glasses shatter, after which she may quickly produce a new pair and replace them.
Shelly de Killer — His radio transceiver explodes.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations

Mia Fey — Brings her arms up and rears back in shock.
Phoenix Wright (as a college student) — Bursts into tears.
Dahlia Hawthorne — While alive, she appears to be blown by a strong gust of wind which causes her parasol to flip inside out. While being channeled by Maya Fey and disguised as Iris in Bridge to the Turnabout, her damage animation is similar, but lacking the parasol. She shares the latter animation with Iris.
Godot — Spits out his coffee.
Luke Atmey — Rears back in shock as his monocle/magnifying lens flies off.
Ron DeLite — Screams as his hair springs out from the side of his head.
Jean Armstrong — Pulls his arms up, frightened, as rose petals scatter around him.
Iris — Similar to Dahlia Hawthorne, she brings her arm up and pulls a shocked expression while wind blows her hair around.
Bikini — Laughs as her face wobbles.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

Olga Orly — In her "Russian waitress" persona, she throws her dishes upwards, then quickly moves her tray from one side to another to catch them as they fall down.
Trucy Wright — Brings her hand to her mouth and rears back in shock with her cape flying up. Although Trucy and her shocked pose appear in later games, the damage animation only appears in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.
Wesley Stickler— Brings his arm up in shock as his cape billows.
Alita Tiala — Bites down on her nails, then grabs her head with both hands and screams in shock as feathers fly off of the front of her dress. Her breakdown is a much longer version of her damage animation.
Lamiroir — Her veil flips over, covering her eyes and making the character on the veil resemble a question mark. It is similar to her shocked expression, where her veil does not fly up as high.
Klavier Gavin — Clutches his ears and shakes his head. A guitar chord is audible during this animation. Similar to Trucy, he appears in later games, but his damage pose (and his sweating pose) only appears in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.
Machi Tobaye — Clutches his body and flinches.
Daryan Crescend — Rears back in shock, causing his pompadour to bounce several times.
Spark Brushel — Wraps his tie around his head in shock.
Vera Misham — As a teenager, she flinches, causing her hair to fly up. As a child, she closes her eyes and screams.
Valant Gramarye — Rears back in shock, causing confetti, doves, and rabbits to appear from his hat. More doves and rabbits appear when he's younger than when he's older.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

Juniper Woods — Pulls on her pigtails as she normally does when distressed, then accidentally lets go, causing them to hit her in the eyes. Her eyes then appear as two "X"s.
Ted Tonate — Moves backwards while accidentally typing gibberish on his speech synthesizer, then slumps forward with his goggles extended.
Phantom — As "Bobby Fulbright", puts his hands to his head as he rears back in shock, in a comically dramatic manner.
Phineas Filch — Jumps up, causing his hat to fly off. He later covers his balding head with his scarf.
Damian Tenma — As "Tenma Taro", rears back in shock, causing his necktie to fold up into its normal shape.
Florent L'Belle — Accidentally sprays himself in the eyes with perfume, reacting in pain.
Myriam Scuttlebutt — Briefly throws her box upwards, then grabs it, after which various objects such as pencils and triangles fall from inside it. Her damage animation is similar to her breakdown, but her laptop does not fall and she does not accidentally reveal her face.
Robin Newman — Faints in an overly dramatic manner.
Hugh O'Conner — Briefly lets go of his bow, which hits him in the side of the head.
Aristotle Means — Leans backwards onto his blackboard, which wobbles and hits him in the back of the head.
Solomon Starbuck — Grabs his neck in panic as his oxygen tank begins to leak.
Yuri Cosmos — Continually spins on his scooter.
Norma DePlume — Her skirt billows as if a strong wind were blowing from below, and she grabs it to avoid being exposed. This pose is similar to one made famous by actress Marilyn Monroe, on whom DePlume's design was based.
Herman Crab — His pet penguin Sniper flies out from his hair with his sleep mask in its beak, and then lets go, causing it to smack onto his eyes.
Sasha Buckler — Raises her arms and widens her eyes, with her inflatable rings popping.
Marlon Rimes — Blood gushes from the bite scars on his shoulders.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice

Ahlbi Ur'gaid — Loses balance and falls over sideways.
Rayfa Padma Khura'in — Flinches as a gust of wind blows on her.
Pees'lubn Andistan'dhin — One of his dahmalan's strings snaps, hitting him in the face.
Bonny de Famme & Betty de Famme — Appear to be caught in a gust of wind which flips their umbrellas inside out. Their damage animations are somewhat similar to Dahlia Hawthorne's.
Roger Retinz — Pulls his cape over his face.
Datz Are'bal — Strikes a pose while standing on one foot and making a comically exaggerated expression.
Beh'leeb Inmee — Clutches her portrait of Tahrust as a gust of wind blows on her, pushing her veil to the side.
Tahrust Inmee — While being channeled by Maya Fey, his spirit briefly comes out of her body.
Geiru Toneido — When in her "cutesy" persona, the round red balloon she is holding pops. After she switches to her aggressive persona, she bites down too hard on her balloon sword, and it pops, causing the rubber to get stuck over her mouth.
Uendo Toneido — Spits out his tea when as Uendo. When as Patches, he covers his face with his fan with a shocked expression.
Paul Atishon — Grabs tightly onto his nameplate with both hands while showing a shocked expression, then examines the nameplate in horror as he notices it is damaged. Unlike other animations, there is continuity here as the scotch tape he later uses to repair the damage is subsequently still visible, with more tape being added each time.
Armie Buff — While piloting her drone, it suddenly explodes and loses control, eventually falling to the floor.
Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in — Clutches her hands as her nails snap.
Amara Sigatar Khura'in — As Nayna, jumps in shock, causing her cane to fall to the ground.
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi — As a witness, moves back in shock, before dropping his left arm to the stand.
Ellen Wyatt — Throws her wedding bouquet upwards, and it falls onto her face. Notably, her damage animation is also consistently used as the transition from her calm persona to her panicked persona.
Sorin Sprocket — Accidentally stabs his own thumb with his pen.
Pierce Nichody — While "operating" on his FXR-UPR mech, one of its gears flies into his face.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

Jacques Portsman — Bends ridiculously far backward.
Rhoda Teneiro — Reels back. Her fringe cut briefly launched upward.
Cammy Meele — Looks away, holding her Mr. iFly plushie in front of her like a shield.
Shi-Long Lang — Cover his face, then holds his arms out defensively.
Mike Meekins — Pushes on his face hard, causing the Blue Badger head to fly off.
Lauren Paups — Reacts as if slapped.
Lance Amano — Accidentally throws his cuffs off himself, before re-entering them.
Calisto Yew — Smears lipstick on her cheek when she turns sharply.
Shih-na — Leans backwards, her calm expression undeterred.
Quercus Alba — Screams while his skin cracks and is blown away by a strong gust of wind.

Teikun Ō (body double) — Puffs his cheeks, eyes widening.
Manosuke Naitō — Accidentally fires his gun pointing towards him; it barely misses his hair.
Hakari Mikagami — Holds herself and react as if struck by a sudden gust of wind, her dress fluttering.
Yumihiko Ichiyanagi — Bends his conductor's baton back far enough that it strikes him in the face when he lets go, leaving a mark.
Sōta Sarushiro — In his normal persona, he falls down with a stressed expression on his face.
Frank Sahwit — Brings his arms up in shock while his toupee bounces up.
Shūji Orinaka — Rears back as if he had been punched in the face.
Marī Miwa — Fluffs up in anger with her pet fox.
Gregory Edgeworth— Rears back in shock as his glasses fly up, before going into a forced grin.
Tsukasa Oyashiki — Covers her face with her hand and her fan.
Yutaka Kazami — The dough on his candy pumps suddenly pops.
Bansai Ichiyanagi — Accidentally lights his beard on fire, leading him to remove his googles so the collected tears from his goggles can put it out.
Shimon Aizawa — Appears shocked; then his backpack pops open, and the flap covers his face momentarily before he stands up straight.

Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken

Ryūnosuke Naruhodō— Reels back in shock before slamming his face and open hands into the defense's bench.
Seishirou Jigoku (Japanese judge)— Leans backwards and suddenly gasps.
Taketsuchi Auchi — Brings his arm back, opening his signature fan.
Judge (British Empire) — Slightly (but sharply) flinches backwards, his spectacles and wig bouncing.
Beppo — Flinches back while holding out his hands in a placating matter.
Oscar Fairplay — Leans back sharply holding his cane
Adam Redifast — Gets a shocked expression while his hat jumps up.
Megundal's Juror No. 1 —Leans back, spreading his arms causing his top hat to be slightly crooked.
Megundal and Lestrade's Juror No. 2 — Suddenly jerks backwards, placing her hand near her mouth in shock.
Megundal's Juror No. 3 —Accidentally flips his knife to his right.
Megundal's Juror No. 5 —Leans back, spreading his arms.
Megundal's Juror No. 6 —Speeads her arms revealing a heart on what she was knitting.

Ryūtarō Naruhodō — Reels back in shock before slamming his face and open hands into the defense's bench.
Decargo Mieterman — Jerks forward with mouth open, wagging his head up and down.
Mrs. Altamont — Suddenly jerks backwards, placing her hand near her mouth in shock.
Benjamin Dobinbough — Clutches his Afro and leans back.
Dobinbough's Juror No. 4 — The test tube he is holding in his left hand burst smoke.
Enoch Drebber — Either makes a weird cross gesture with his arms, sometimes looking to his left, or spreads his arms in a similar fashion to a malfunctioning robot.
Connette Rozaic — Suddenly jerks backwards with her left arm up a little.
"Gossip"/Hugh Boone — Wraps his arms around himself and screams.
Everyday Mittlemont — Rears back in shock.
Venus — Firecrackers suddenly explode around her.
Maria Goulloyne — Quickly lifts up her sharp utensils.

Emeer Punchenbaug — Spills his drink all over his face.
Hershel Layton — Reels and bends forward, holding his hat down. This animation is used only when presenting incorrect evidence as Layton.
Zacharias Barnham — Reels back and shields his face with his right arm.
Knightle — Holds his wooden shield up and reels back in shock.
Wordsmith — Ricochets around the room like a deflating balloon.
Shakey — Falls to the ground, part of his armor falling separately.
