Datz Are'bal

Datz Are'bal is a member of the Defiant Dragons and former paratrooper who escaped from prison around the same time the death of Tahrust Inmee occurred. He briefly suffered from amnesia during this time, going by the name A'nohn Ihmus (TBD).

The Defiant Dragons

Are'bal was the right-hand man to Dhurke Sahdmadhi, the leader of the Defiant Dragons, a revolutionary group whose goal was to overthrow the regime of Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in so that Khura'in's judicial system could be reformed and the Defense Culpability Act nullified. During his time in the group, Are'bal came to befriend both of Dhurke's sons, Nahyuta Sahdmadhi and Apollo Justice.

Escape from prison

At some point, Are'bal was imprisoned in the penitentiary located on a mountaintop above Khura'in's Inner Sanctum. Prior to the Purification Rite, a plan was formed to break Are'bal out of prison with the help of fellow Defiant Dragons members Tahrust and Beh'leeb Inmee. Using prayer flags that had been sewn together to form a makeshift parachute, Are'bal parachuted from the mountain prison where he was held, but hit his head upon landing and lost consciousness and memory.

As it turned out, Tahrust was killed in the time Are'bal made his descent. He was accosted by the authorities and asked to provide testimony in Maya Fey's subsequent trial, under the name A'nohn Ihmus (TBD). To avoid suspicion, Are'bal provided a fictional testimony on the spot to implicate Fey. Phoenix Wright managed to disprove his testimonies, during which he fully regained his memories, but maintained his amnesiac facade until he was unmasked. He quickly escaped, briefly addressing Nahyuta before doing so.

After Fey was accused for the murder of Rheel Neh'mu, Wright managed to track him down as he was the last remaining lead on the double homicide case. Are'bal had meanwhile returned to the temporary hideout in Dhurke Sahdmadhi's old legal office, having shaved the facial hair he had grown while amnesic. To ensure Wright was not a spy for Ga'ran in return for leniency, he knocked Wright out and brought him to the hideout, pretending to be defecting from the rebel group and intending to sell rebel secrets to Inga Karkhuul Khura'in. Wright, breaking his Psyche-Locks, proved Are'bal's true intentions; impressed, Are'bal told him of the true nature of the revolutionary group and gave him the key to the hideout the Inmees had prepared in the Inner Sanctum.

Leading the revolution

After Fey's trial, Are'bal traveled to the United States with Dhurke Sahdmadhi to meet Archie Buff and retrieve the Founder's Orb, having already secured an agreement with the professor. However, as Paul Atishon had previously informed Buff that the Defiant Dragons were dangerous, Buff refused to surrender the Orb, leading to an argument between Buff and Are'bal. Are'bal left his suitcase at the scene, which Atishon later used in his visit to murder Buff by dropping it on the professor from the second floor.

The next day, Are'bal was arrested for trespassing; as he'd locked his passport in his suitcase, he was considered to have entered the country illegally, but the charges were lifted shortly thereafter. During court, he became a suspect of the professor's murder, as he was seen leaving from the scene of the crime, but was cleared of them when Apollo Justice and Wright figured out that Atishon was the real killer during their civil trial.

Afterwards, Are'bal traveled back to Khura'in and led the Defiant Dragons alongside Beh'leeb to demand the release of Dhurke, after he had been arrested for the murder of Inga Karkhuul Khura'in. Are'bal was in charge of ensuring Dhurke's safety, but lost sight of him during the trial that followed, as Dhurke had already died by then and was in fact being channeled.

Following the trial proving Dhurke's innocence, Are'bal assisted Justice's efforts to reopen Dhurke's law office after Justice chose to stay behind in Khura'in.

Are'bal has a carefree and friendly personality, often casually addressing his friends and allies, responding with exaggerated reactions, and bursting into laughter at anything he considers funny even in inappropriate scenarios. He sometimes refers to friends by nicknames, such as "PW" for Wright or "Yuty" for Nahyuta. Other characters have pointed out that Are'bal's apparent inability to take things seriously have often landed him in trouble.

Another prominent trait is his insatiable hunger, which Are'bal claims to have developed due to being physically buff, and as a result of expending lots of energy from constantly being on the run. Subsequently, Are'bal is frequently seen snacking on apples or sewer lizards.

Despite his somewhat comical nature, Are'bal can get serious if the situation requires it, and was shown to lament the passing of his close friends. His usual weapon is a kukri, which he wields with deftness and skill.

Name

• His Japanese alias comes from  "nanashi no gonbei" (名無しの権兵衛), which roughly means "John Doe," a generic name for people with no known identity or hidden identity, fitting his status as both an amnesiac man and as a revolutionary in disguise. Provisional means existing for the present, but can be changed at a later date.
• His Japanese real name comes from the phrase "datto de nigeru" (脱兎で逃げる), which means "fleeing as fast as I can," befitting his status as a revolutionary on the run from the law.
• His English alias, A'nohn Ihmus, is a play on "anonymous". TBD means "to be determined."
• His English real name is a play on "that's a rebel", referring to his association with the Defiant Dragons. It could also be a play on the expression "that's horrible", referring to his misadventures, and a fellow Defiant Dragons member passing away in his debut case . Finally, it could also be a play on "That's our ball", referring to his quest to find the Founder's Orb.
