The "detention center" is the main area in the prison for holding most suspects in Los Angeles, and is directly connected with the prison itself. Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice and Gregory Edgeworth visit their clients in the Visitor's Room.
Wright first went to the detention center to visit Maya Fey when she was accused of murdering her sister Mia Fey, and Justice's first visit to the detention center was to visit Wocky Kitaki. Although visitation is usually limited to a suspect's defense attorney and closely-related individuals, prosecutors have access to all prisoners via the visitor's room. Marī Miwa was the prison's director for a few years until April 6, 2019.
Features
When visiting his clients, Wright often wondered if the guard in the room was bored, but had no way of telling since he seldom paid the defense attorney any attention. When Justice visits his clients, he often wonders whether the guard in the room is even breathing. However, unlike with Wright, the guard does actually talk to Justice on occasion. A security camera is the only other examinable object in the room, which Wright and Justice have each thought to be watching them. It is not uncommon for Justice, as it was for Wright, to arrive at the detention center only to find his client is away being questioned.
Visiting hours are typically from 9:00 to 16:00, but lawyers have been allowed to meet their clients until 19:00. People who enter the detention center are checked by metal detectors. Aside from the standard meals for suspects, additional food from the menu can be delivered if they pay with their own money. The first meal of the day is determined by shaking dice.
Activities Allowed by Detainees
There are several questionable things that detainees are apparently allowed to do while in detention.
- Not one defendant ever encountered by the player in any game wears attire usual of one who is imprisoned; they all appear with their standard outfit in-game.
- Many defendants will submit pieces of paper (predominately defense attorney requests) through the small hole in the window seperating the conversers that don't seem to be checked by the guard.
- April May wore a rather provactive outfit during her stay in the center.
- The guard didn't seem to mind when Maya Fey channeled Mia Fey (completley changing her physical appearance) in Reunion, and Turnabout.
- In Turnabout Big Top, Max Galactica not only wore a torn-open shirt, but he was also allowed to hold playing cards and exchange them (unchecked) with Wright and Maya.
- One of the most notable cases is Matt Engarde in Farewell, My Turnabout; he is allowed to use his wrist-mounted cell phone to call people and he somehow managed to obtain a drinking glass later in the episode.
- Even though she didn't eat it, Maggey was still able to attain a lunchbox Wright gave her from Gumshoe.
- Wesley Stickler was apparently permitted to keep the large book he normally carries around with him.
- Although not luxurious, Kristoph Gavin -- imprisoned for first-degree murder at the time had managed to live in a furnaced, book-stocked solitary cell during his imprisonment.
Visits by prosecutors
Godot and Miles Edgeworth have also visited the detention center. The former used such visits to keep an eye on Morgan Fey after she was moved from Solitary Cell 13, whereby he learned of her second plot to kill Maya Fey. Edgeworth, on the other hand, once visited to observe Wright conversing with this client Matt Engarde, another to meet with Iris when he briefly took over one of Wright's cases, and used another visit to talk to Manosuke Naitō.
When Maya Fey was accused of murder for the second time, Franziska von Karma set up hidden cameras in the detention center to take photographs of Maya channeling Mia. She went on the use these pictures to prove the existence of the Kurain Channeling Technique in court.
Other language versions
In the Japanese language version, the detainees are usually issued typical Japanese food (such as miso soup and salted salmon) to eat.
