The "detention center" is the main area in the prison for holding most suspects in Los Angeles, and is directly connected with the prison itself. Defense attorneys visit their clients in the Visitor's Room. Marī Miwa was the prison's director for a few years until April 6, 2019.
Rules
Visiting hours are typically from 9:00 to 16:00, but lawyers have been allowed to meet their clients until 19:00. People who enter the detention center are checked by metal detectors. Aside from the standard meals for suspects, additional food from the menu can be delivered if they pay with their own money. The first meal of the day is determined by shaking dice.
The rules for detainees while meeting with a visitor seem rather lax, despite the presence of a guard, as on multiple occasions, detainees and visitors have been allowed to freely exchange objects without intervention. Not even the drastic physical changes caused by a member of the Fey clan performing the Kurain Channeling Technique have drawn so much as a comment from the guard.
Although visitation is usually limited to a suspect's defense attorney and closely-related individuals, prosecutors have access to all prisoners via the visitor's room.
Visits by defense attorneys
Wright first went to the detention center to visit Maya Fey when she was accused of murdering her sister Mia Fey. Justice's first visit was to see his first client, Wocky Kitaki. Athena Cykes's first visit was to see another of Justice's clients, Damian Tenma. She later visited her own first client as defense team leader, Juniper Woods.
When visiting his clients, Wright often wonders if the guard in the room is bored, but has no way of telling since he seldom pays the defense attorney any attention. When Justice visits his clients, he often wonders whether the guard in the room is even breathing. However, unlike with Wright, the guard does actually talk to Justice on occasion. A security camera is the only other examinable object in the room, which Wright and Justice have each thought to be watching them.
Visits by prosecutors
Godot and Miles Edgeworth have also visited the detention center. The former used such visits to keep an eye on Morgan Fey after she was moved from Solitary Cell 13, whereby he learned of her second plot to kill Maya Fey. Edgeworth, on the other hand, once visited to observe Wright conversing with his client Matt Engarde, another to meet with Iris when he briefly took over one of Wright's cases, and used another visit to talk to Manosuke Naitō.
When Maya Fey was accused of murder for the second time, Franziska von Karma set up hidden cameras in the detention center to take photographs of Maya channeling Mia. She went on the use these pictures to prove the existence of the Kurain Channeling Technique in a courtroom trial.
Other language versions
In the Japanese language version, the detainees are usually issued typical Japanese food (such as miso soup and salted salmon) to eat.
Note
- Mia Fey is the only protagonist in the Ace Attorney series to date to not be shown visiting the detention center at some point during their career (thus excluding her post-mortem visits via being channeled by Maya).
