Edward Everett was the president of Harvard University in Massachusetts, America, during a period in the 19th century.
Everett petitioned for Maria Mitchell, an female astronomer from Massachusetts, to be considered as the winner of the award for "first man to discover a new comet with a telescope", stating that it would be a shame to disregard her already well known discovery over a "technical punctilio".
- Edward Everett was a real life politician, pastor, educator, and diplomat. He was also the actual president of Harvard University between February 1846 and December 1848. He was known for his stern petitions on political matters.
