Ernest Amano was the owner of the Amano Group and father of the kidnapped Lance Amano.

A kidnapped son

Main article: The Kidnapped Turnabout

Upon receiving the ransom demands for his son, Ernest called Miles Edgeworth, who was wrapping up another case at the time. The distraught father had decided to entrust Edgeworth with the delivery of the $1 million ransom to the agreed drop-off in the haunted house of the Gatewater Land theme park. However, although Edgeworth successfully made the drop-off, the kidnappers didn't release Lance.

Ernest was also concerned about his butler, Oliver Deacon, with whom he had lost contact. The butler's disappearance was soon explained when his corpse was discovered. Ernest showed Edgeworth a "love letter" addressed to Lance. Lance was discovered soon after.

Some time later, after Edgeworth had accused Lance of murdering "Oliver Deacon", Ernest showed up. Although he presented evidence which he thought would clear his son, Edgeworth used it to figure out the scene of the murder: the haunted house. However, before Edgeworth could take the investigation to the crime scene, Ernest stopped him. He revealed that he had just bought the deed to the haunted house, and so had the right to refuse the investigation team entry. Nevertheless, with the help of Kay Faraday's Little Thief, Edgeworth finally proved Lance to be the killer.

Just before Shi-Long Lang arrested Lance, the Interpol agent revealed that he had come to Gatewater Land for the purpose of investigating Ernest Amano, who he suspected of helping a certain smuggling ring. Since Ernest had tampered with evidence to attempt to cover for his son, Lang was given just the reason he needed to arrest the Amanos. Unfortunately, before Lang could take them away, Jacques Portsman arrived with his partner, Buddy Faith. Portsman stated that since he had been put in charge of prosecution for the trial of the Amanos, he would take them away, much to Lang's indignation.

A video tape

Tyrell Badd told Edgeworth that it was the video tape that was certain proof Manny Coachen was the killer of Cece Yew. However it was stolen by none other than the director of the Amano Group, Ernest Amano himself! Badd also told Edgeworth that the Amano Group had many connections to the smuggling ring so it makes Ernest Amano a member and agent of the smuggling ring. The day after Lance Amano and Ernest Amano was arrested for murder, Badd forced Ernest to tell where the video tape is. Edgeworth saw the video tape and knew it was the same video tape that proved Jacques Portsman is the killer of Detective Buddy Faith. Badd noted that Jacques Portsman was a prosecutor who was in charge of case related to the smuggling ring or the ringleader. The video tape is declared illegal evidence.

Escaped man

Ernest Amano helped Colin Devorae hide from the police as long as he doesn't reveal information about the Amano Group or the smuggling ring. With the help of Ernest, Colin took on a new title,Oliver Deacon. Oliver didn't reveal to Lauren Paups that he was really her father. Lance Amano knew so he thought it would end badly if he told Lauren. Lance also convinced she had killed her father. However Edgeworth proved that it was nothing more than a set-up by Lance Amano.

Name

• "Amanogawa" is the Japanese word for the "Milky Way".

• His English surname is a shortened version of his Japanese one.

• His full English name may also be a play on "earnest man", which is hardly fitting for such a corrupt character.
