Shelly de Killer
To think that I would suffer an injury... Ethan Rooke... You could say he was a most capable individual. ...Unlike this man here.
Horace Knightley
Tsk! What's so different about me and Rooke?
Shelly de Killer
I believe you're about as different as a pawn and a queen.

President Wang hired the security company that employed Rooke in preparation for a speech at Gourd Lake on March 25, 2019. Two days before the speech, however, a professional assassin by the name of Shelly de Killer tried to eliminate the president. Although the assassin managed to infiltrate the bodyguards and easily incapacitate fellow bodyguard Horace Knightley, Rooke managed to grab and twist the professional killer's arm, then put a bullet in it. De Killer was able to escape, albeit injured and with a new-found respect for the bodyguard.

Knightley fires upon Rooke.

Knightley approached the president with a plan for a staged assassination attempt during his speech to help him boost his ailing approval ratings back home. Rooke refused to go along with such a plan, so the president and Knightley arranged things for the plot without his knowledge. Indeed, shots rang out during the speech, and with the help of Knightley, Rooke rushed his charge to the safety of the private presidential seaplane and put him in a secure panic room. However, unbeknownst to Rooke, Knightley had become increasingly resentful of Rooke's superior skills and the respect he had garnered. Therefore, once Rooke and Knightley were left alone after seeing to the president's safety, the latter turned his gun on the former and shot him dead.

Fortunately, Miles Edgeworth was able to investigate and resolve Rooke's death. Despite the efforts of Knightley and the president to prevent him from investigating, de Killer, determined to know the truth behind Rooke's death, took Knightley hostage to coerce him into allowing Edgeworth into the president's plane. De Killer would later remark that he would never forget the man who had managed to best him.

Personality

Rooke was a very skilled bodyguard who was even able to injure and drive off the infamous Shelly de Killer. Although not from Zheng Fa himself, he was the president's most trusted and capable bodyguard. An honest man, he refused to take part in the fake assassination attempt.

Name

  • Japanese - Gai Tojiro (外城 涯):
    • His Japanese name contains the kanji for "castle" (城), which is a reference to the rook chess piece.
  • English (Unofficial) - Ethan Rooke:
    • His name in the unofficial English fan translation patch for Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit is in reference to the rook chess piece and the meaning of his original Japanese name. His first name means "strong and safe," which befits both a castle and a bodyguard.

Development

  • Like a few other characters in Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit, Rooke has design and personality parallel with a chess piece. With his hairstyle, head shape, name pun, and desire to protect his "king", Rooke represents the rook.
