Fainfol spell

The section on Fainfol in the Grand Grimoire.

Fainfol is listed in the Grand Grimoire as one of the possible spells usable by witches in Labyrinthia. It is described as an instant sleep spell that causes those who hear its incantation to lose all consciousness the second they hear it.

Name[]

  • Its English name may come from a combination of "faint" and "fall". Alternatively, it may be a combination of "fain" (meaning obliged) and "fall" (as in falling asleep), making the name of the spell literally mean "obliged to fall asleep", which is its exact effect.
  • "Somnis", its name in the French localization, comes from "sommeil", meaning "sleep".
  • The spell's German name is "Somnus", which is both the Latin word for "sleep" and the the personification of sleep in Roman mythology.
  • The spell's Spanish name is "Sopio", which is the Latin word for "I lull to sleep". It could also be related to Spanish "sopor" ("drowsiness") and "quedarse sopa" ("to fall asleep").
