First-class cabin 001 on the SS Burya is one of two first-class cabins on the steamship. Kazuma Asogi lodged here during his trip from Japan to the United Kingdom with judicial assistant Susato Mikotoba and Inspector Satoru Hosonaga, who was assigned as an undercover bodyguard.

The stowaway[]

Asogi secretly brought along his friend, Ryunosuke Naruhodo, who managed to fit inside a travelling case. Naruhodo would live inside the wardrobe, hiding inside whenever Asogi had visitors, usually Mikotoba, who would check up on Asogi every morning. Naruhodo made a seal reading "keep out" in Japanese, using paper and pulverized rice from one of the dinners. Asogi would affix the seal to the wardrobe whenever Naruhodo went inside. Asogi would tell Naruhodo about an important mission that he had to do no matter what, but never had the chance to explain what that mission was.

The steak thief[]

On January 6, there was a brief power failure, which Naruhodo used to steal a rib steak from the kitchens. He was seen fleeing to the first-class cabin passageway, and the detective Herlock Sholmes headed there, but not before helping himself to two rib steaks of his own. With all other first-class cabins being unoccupied at that time, Sholmes knocked on Asogi's door. What followed was an outwardly friendly, but tense conversation in which Asogi tried every excuse that he could think of to convince Sholmes to investigate elsewhere, only for the exchange to end with Sholmes opening the wardrobe. Luckily for Naruhodo, he had taken a brief opportunity to sneak under the bed before he could be found.

This was followed by the arrival of Bif Strogenov, who was also investigating the theft. He opened the wardrobe and found Sholmes, who claimed to have found the bones of the three stolen rib steaks. Sholmes convinced Strogenov that the thief must have escaped elsewhere, ruling Asogi out because he was evidently still hungry.

The ballerina[]

Two evenings later, the crew of the Burya prepared to receive a secret passenger from Shanghai, a teenage ballerina by the name of Nikolina Pavlova, who was running away from the ballet group Novavich Ballet. The chicken dinner was laced with a sleeping drug, in an attempt to ensure that there would be no witnesses to Pavlova boarding the ship other than the crew. However, Asogi did not like chicken, so he gave his portion to Naruhodo. Pavlova boarded at midnight and received lodgings in first-class cabin 002, next to Asogi's cabin.

A short while later, Pavolva's cat Darka ran away through a vent connecting her cabin to Asogi's. Pavlova tried to lure Darka back with a low whistle and a cat toy, both of which Asogi noticed and wrote in his diary, though, unable to identify the toy, he described it as a speckled band. Eventually, Pavlova came personally to Asogi's door to get her cat back. Asogi answered the door, initially expecting it to be Hosonaga.

Asogi helped Pavlova find her cat, but also recognized her, causing her to admit her situation to him. Pavolva grew fearful that Asogi would call on someone else and expose her secret, and pushed him in a panic. As he was falling, Asogi grasped one of Pavlova's earrings, breaking off part of it, and slipped after stepping on a bell worn by Darka, breaking it in two, leaving a dark stain. He fell to the floor and was knocked unconscious.

Strogenov heard the noise and headed to the cabin, where Pavlova explained what had happened. Finding the sleeping Naruhodo inside the wardrobe, Strogenov decided to alter the scene to frame the stowaway. He upset Asogi's ink bottle and wrote "ГАРДЕРОБЪ" (the Russian word for "wardrobe") on the floor, making it look as if Asogi had written it before dying. He also found half of Darka's bell and disposed of it in the wastepaper basket in Pavlova's cabin, failing to find the other half in the darkness. He then triggered the ship's emergency stop, using the deceleration to slide the bolt shut on Asogi's cabin, thereby creating a locked-room scenario pointing to Naruhodo as the only person who could have possibly attacked Asogi.

There was no answer when Mikotoba checked up on Asogi that morning. The crewmen forced open the door, but before they could do anything else, Sholmes arrived on the scene to investigate the "curious murder" that had unfolded. Nonetheless, Strogenov's efforts had seemingly worked, as Sholmes found Naruhodo inside the wardrobe and declared him the culprit. Asogi was sent to the ship's doctor before Naruhodo woke up and found out that he had been accused of his best friend's murder.

Naruhodo managed to convince Mikotoba to let him investigate the scene, and Hosonaga agreed to let him leave the cabin. Hosonaga tried to justify his decision to the captain by saying that Naruhodo wanted to find the meaning behind Asogi's last diary entries, but suffered violent retaliation for this. He also received a postmortem report during this time, which stated that Asogi had died instantly from a broken neck. Eventually, Naruhodo was able to investigate Pavlova's cabin and figure out the true events behind Asogi's demise, proving his innocence. After that, Sholmes suggested that Asogi's study tour could still go ahead if someone were to replace him, and Naruhodo offered to study as hard as he could to take on that role. He did this in order to fulfill Asogi's mission, despite not knowing what the mission was.

Name[]

The cabin is listed as "Kazuma's Cabin" in the Move menu, and is referred to as "First-Class Cabin No. 1" in scene intros. However, in Twisted Karma and His Last Bow, it is shown that steamship tickets write the name down as "First-class cabin 001".
