First-class cabin 002 on the SS Burya is one of two first-class cabins on the steamship. It went unoccupied during most of Ryunosuke Naruhodo's and Susato Mikotoba's trip from Japan to the United Kingdom. Naruhodo resided as a stowaway in a cabin next door, originally occupied by Kazuma Asogi.

The dance of deduction[]

Main article: The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band

About two weeks into the trip, the crew of the Burya prepared to receive a secret passenger from Shanghai, a teenage ballerina by the name of Nikolina Pavlova, who was running away from the ballet group Novavich Ballet. The chicken dinner was laced with a sleeping drug, in an attempt to ensure that there would be no witnesses to Pavlova boarding the ship other than the crew. Pavlova boarded at midnight and received lodgings in first-class cabin 002. A short while later, Pavolva's cat Darka ran away through a vent connecting her cabin to Asogi's. Pavlova tried to lure Darka back with a low whistle and a cat toy, and eventually resorted to personally coming to Asogi's door to get her cat back.

A short time later, Strogenov heard a noise from Asogi's cabin, and headed to find Asogi on the floor, seemingly killed or knocked unconscious by Pavlova. Finding the sleeping Naruhodo inside Asogi's wardrobe, Strogenov decided to alter the scene to frame the stowaway. Among the measures that he took was to find half of a bell worn by Darka, and dispose of it in the wastepaper basket in Pavlova's cabin, failing to find the other half in the darkness. He then triggered the ship's emergency stop, using the deceleration to slide the bolt shut on Asogi's cabin, thereby creating a locked-room scenario pointing to Naruhodo as the only person who could have possibly attacked Asogi.

The following day, Pavlova started disguising herself as an older gentleman by the name of Grimesby Roylott, and kept to her cabin. However, she came across an article in the newspaper about her disappearance from Shanghai, causing her to scream in panic. She made up her mind to cut her hair to complete her disguise, but before she could do so, Naruhodo, Mikotoba, and Herlock Sholmes rushed inside, having heard her scream. Despite her efforts, she could not stop their dance of deduction, which exposed her true identity and the fact that she had smuggled a cat onboard.

Strogenov arrived to fetch "Roylott" and kick out the guests before they could pry any further. However, Naruhodo and Mikotoba returned shortly thereafter to investigate the cabin with nobody else around. Outside, Sholmes activated the emergency stop for fun, causing the bolt on the cabin door to slide shut. Strogenov and Pavlova returned, but before they could do anything, Sholmes announced that he had solved the case. Another dance of deduction ensued, and Naruhodo figured out the true events behind Asogi's demise and Strogenov's efforts to frame Naruhodo afterward.

Name[]

The cabin is listed as "Miss Pavlova's Cabin" in the Move menu, and is referred to as "First-Class Cabin No. 2" in a scene intro. However, in Twisted Karma and His Last Bow, it is shown that steamship tickets write the name of First-Class Cabin No. 1 down as "First-class cabin 001".
