France is a country in Europe. It shares borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Andorra, and Monaco. France also has coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its territory covers 551,695 km². With a population of approximately 67 million inhabitants, France is the third-most populous country in Europe.
The transfer to Paris that never was[]
Scotland Yard detective Tobias Gregson intended to transfer to the Paris Police Preference, even intending to ask Gina Lestrade to join him. However, a month before he was meant to leave, Gregson was murdered.
Fine French oil[]
For his contraptions, Enoch Drebber only used specially-imported very high-quality French machine oil that was impossible to obtain in the United Kingdom. This ultimately led to Drebber's downfall, as traces of said distinct oil on his business card was used by Gina Lestrade and Ryunosuke Naruhodo to take advantage of Toby's potent sense of smell to track him down to his his hidden workshop.
Photo shoot in Paris[]
Cindy Stone travelled to Paris, the capital of France, during her time as a model. This included her last trip abroad before her murder. This journey was in part for a photo shoot, but also to meet one of her many "sugar daddies". For the trip, she took the heavy clock that her boyfriend, Larry Butz, had made for her.
Stone's home was in Los Angeles, California (in the Pacific Time Zone) which is nine hours behind the Central European Time Zone, which contains Paris. When she returned home, she forgot to set the clock back, which proved to be a vital clue in solving the mystery of her murder.
A picky parrot[]
Polly (Yanni Yogi's pet parrot) is apparently picky about what she eats and will only eat special high-quality bird pellets from France which can only be bought from a "big pet shop downtown".
Reading materials for clowns[]
Moe, the Berry Big Circus's clown, owns a copy of "Jean-Luc de Laduc's Guide To Obnoxious French Pierrots". The judge's brother later refers to a similarly-named book from the same author ("Jean-Luc de Laduc's Guide To Obnoxious French Paintings") when commenting on Larry Butz's appearance. It is unclear if the books actually originate from France despite the stereotypically French-sounding name of their author, although Pierrot is a foolish sad clown character from French pantomime that wears a loose white outfit.
Trés Bien[]
At the beginning of 2017, Jean Armstrong opened his French-themed restaurant Trés Bien. It soon proved to be less than popular with the clientele due to Armstrong's terrible cooking with high prices and was the scene of a murder in December 2018. Victor Kudo liked visiting Trés Bien due to reminding him of France, where he used to run a casino. However, this may not be true as he also claimed that his casino was in London.
French localization differences[]
In European releases of Ace Attorney games, references to France in the French localizations were changed to preserve the fact that some characters lived and went to a foreign country (or, in the case of some characters, most likely so as not to cause offense). Also it should be noted that, unlike the German, Spanish, and Italian versions, nearly all characters are given different names from the English versions of the games (e.g., Miles Edgeworth has the same name in the English, German, Spanish, and Italian versions, but is called "Benjamin Hunter" in the French versions).
Other changes include:
- The games are set in Paris, rather than Los Angeles.
- Cindy Stone's trip is to Sydney, Australia, rather than Paris.
- During his testimony, Redd White complains about French people being impatient, rather than Americans.
- The differing accent of Lotta Hart (localized as "Eva Cozésouci") is kept in the French localizations by stating that she originates from Marseille, in the south of France.
- The Police Department entrance now has a French police car.
- The effeminate "French" chef Jean Armstrong is changed to an effeminate "Italian" chef called "Luigi Labocca". The name of his restaurant was also changed from "Trés Bien" to "Bellisima".
- Roger Retinz (localized as "Richard Laudienz") uses several 50 Euro notes to fan himself rather than 100 Dollar bills. His business card is also changed to have Paris written as the location.
