Furio Tigre
Hey! Whad'youse think youse doin' wit my bike!? Gwoaaaaaaaaaar! Youse been messin' with my new ride? Is that what youse been doin'!?

Furio "The Tiger" Tigre was the owner of a loan shop called Tender Lender, along with his assistant "Violetta". He used his similar appearance to attorney Phoenix Wright to pose as him as part of a plot to frame Maggey Byrde for the murder of Glen Elg. He appeared as a witness in her trial a month later.

Accident[]

The scooter crash.

The scooter crash.

In the summer of 2018, Tigre got involved in a hit-and-run on a car while riding his scooter, severely injuring the car's driver. Unfortunately for him, the driver was Viola Cadaverini, the granddaughter of Bruto Cadaverini, the most powerful criminal in all of Los Angeles. Upon discovering it was his fault, the furious mob boss would accept no other placation than Tigre paying the $1 million that was spent for the surgery to save Viola's life.

With little time on his hands, Tigre called in all the loans he could. In particular, a young computer programmer named Glen Elg had racked up a huge debt due to his gambling addiction on top of Tender Lender's interest rates. Knowing full well that Elg would default on his loans, Tigre instead counted on the programmer to use his skills as collateral, in order to create something much more valuable than the debt amount. Meanwhile, Viola, became infatuated with Tigre, not being told the real reason he was paying her medical bills. She began assisting Tigre in his business, much to his hidden chagrin, as he could not stand her, but had to suck up to her in fear of angering her powerful grandfather.

Elg's murder[]

(There are two things that I consider inexcusable. Poisoning, and betrayal! Only a coward would hurt people using either of these tactics.)
Poisoning Glen Elg.

Poisoning Glen Elg.

(See development section) later on December 3rd, the day that Elg had agreed to repay his loan, he created a devastating computer virus that Tigre could sell on the black market for millions of dollars, intending to deliver the CD during a meeting with Tigre at Trés Bien, a French restaurant whose owner, Jean Armstrong, was also deeply in debt with the loan shark. Unfortunately for Tigre, during the meeting, Elg, who was also listening to the radio with an earpiece, managed to catch a lucky break, winning the grand prize of the city's local lottery, more than enough to pay his debts, but not nearly enough to settle Tigre's. A desperate Tigre poisoned Elg and took the CD containing the virus, acting out the murder afterward by posing as the victim, to provide a false witness for testifying and pinning the blame on Maggey Byrde, who was a waitress at the restaurant, with Viola assisting as Byrde's impostor, and Armstrong being forced to help with the charade. However, Tigre did not know at the time that his revised reenactment of the murder was not perfect, as it contained a series of critical contradictions and mistakes, the worst of which was Tigre putting Elg's radio earpiece in his left ear, unaware that Elg had recently had his left eardrum ruptured in a fight.

Tigre then went the extra mile, disguising himself as the famous defense attorney Phoenix Wright, complete with a cardboard attorney's badge, and went to Byrde to offer to defend her. Although Byrde was confused by the tan of his skin and badge at first, "Wright" hand-waved this by lying that he had been to Hawaii on a business trip. Completely taken in by the laughably poor impersonation of the man who had saved her once before, Byrde hired "Wright". She was subsequently convicted following a very poor performance from "Wright", the people in the courtroom having apparently suspected that something was amiss, but being too scared by him to say anything. Armstrong, being one of the witnesses to the staged crime, would later claim that Tigre flirted with him in court. After the trial, Tigre sold the virus on the black market, keeping the original CD of the program for himself, and paid the surgery's bill; said virus would later be used to attack the servers of the Criminal Affairs Department.

Downfall[]

Main article: Recipe for Turnabout

One month later, Dick Gumshoe angrily chastised the real Wright for the trial, of which Wright had not previously been informed. Wright took up Byrde's appeal and began investigating the case. After a first encounter with Tigre in which he tried to make Wright pay up for allegedly soiling his scooter, the loan shark quickly retreated upon learning of the latter's identity, flippantly declaring that he himself was "Phoenix Wright". Wright later visited Tender Lender's office, where, after finding evidence of Tigre's deception in court, he once again met face-to-face with Tigre, who once again tried to coerce money out of Wright using the excuse of a soiled carpet; however, Viola admission of guilt for this particular accident made Tigre relent and leave the scene, but not before threatening Wright to cease trying to ruin his plan.

After speaking with Viola, and making her realize Tigre's true role in her incident, Wright obtained her medical papers. In response, Tigre ambushed Wright at Trés Bien, where he once again forced Armstrong to support him. Tigre roughed up Wright, and was about to burn the medical papers with a lighter, if not for Gumshoe's timely intervention, which allowed Wright to flee with the papers while Gumshoe held off Tigre.

The next day, Wright was able to force Armstrong to confess about his coercion by Tigre, which made the lead prosecutor, Godot, ask for a thirty-minute recess in order to subpoena him. Despite Tigre's many attempts to dodge accusations, Wright tricked him into implicating himself by presenting a bottle containing Elg's ear medicine and claiming that it was the poison used to kill him; Tigre laughed and made an outburst that corrected him, explaining, in intricate detail, the type of bottle that held the poison, something he would have been unable to do if he was not the killer. Upon realizing his mistake, Tigre let out a horrifying roar, which caused all the lights in the courtroom to break. Viola later implied that she sent poisoned, or at least in some way tainted, tea to him in prison.

"Legacy"[]

Miles Edgeworth later learned from Larry Butz about a case where an entire courtroom was fooled by a cardboard badge. He was shocked at the decay of this country's judicial system.

The judge suggested some years later during a trial that Apollo Justice was a fake attorney wearing a badge made of cardboard. When Justice questioned why the judge chose cardboard specifically, the latter replied he had once had an "infuriating" experience involving one, referencing Tigre.

Personality[]

Furio Tigre
Youse wanna argue with me!? Is that what you' doin'? You dink youse can take me on!? I'm gonna flatten youse two into pancakes and turn youse into my new rugs!
Mugshot.

Mugshot.

Furio Tigre had a very short temper and literally roared like a tiger when he got angry. He liked to intimidate his debtors as well as just about everyone else he met. His sky-high interest rates allowed him to control his debtors. Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey would often hide under a table in fear when he roared. Even in court, the judge cowered under Tigre's roars. Godot was the only one who was unfazed by his tactics. His lack of intellect was seen in his cover-up of the crime scene and his shoddy disguise as Phoenix Wright, though the court was too intimidated to say anything about the disguise. His reliance on intimidation to get his way mostly made up for this, until Wright fooled Tigre into implicating himself for Glen Elg's murder.

However, Tigre had another side to him. In a compromised situation, Tigre would be reduced to a simpering suck-up. This usually happened when he was around Viola (due to Tigre's debt to her powerful grandfather), but also when he was cornered during Maggey Byrde's appeal trial.

Bizarrely, Tigre has expressed a strong aversion to wrist watches, with round watches being the number one thing that wound him up the most in the world, and the square ones being second. On the other hand, Tigre had great pride in his scooter, despite it being dented, broken, and soiled by pigeon's droppings, and even greater pride in the punching bag he kept in his office, calling it multiple times "the best punching-bag in the world".

Name[]

  • Japanese - Toranosuke Shibakuzou (芝九蔵 虎ノ助) // Naniwa no Zenitora (ナニワのゼニトラ):
    • "Shibakuzo" (芝九蔵) is Kansai slang which roughly means something along the lines of "I'm gonna kick your ass!" (しばくぞ).
    • "Toranosuke" (虎ノ助) roughly means "tiger boy" in Japanese.
    • "Zenitora" may come from the Japanese "zeni" (ぜに) meaning "money" or "coin", and "tora" (虎), which means "tiger". This would make his alias literally "money tiger", which is fitting considering his occupation. "Naniwa" is the former name for the Japanese city of Osaka.
  • English - Furio Tigre // The Tiger:
    • "Furio" comes from the word "furioso", which means "furious" in Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. This is most likely referring to his personality.
    • "Tigre" means "tiger" in a number of languages.
    • Prior to finding out his name, Maya Fey refers to Tigre as "Xin Eohp", which is "Phoenix" spelled backwards. She also asks about whether there was a fake Maya named "Ayam", which is "Maya" spelled backwards. When Fey confronted Tigre with Wright, she accidentally called him "Xin Eohp", to which Tigre roared, causing Fey to hide under a nearby table in fear.

Unofficial[]

  • Brazilian Portuguese - Furio Tigre // O Tigrão: [1]
    • No change from the English version.
    • "O Tigrão" means "The Big Tiger"
    • Prior to finding out his name, Maya Fey refers to Tigre as "Xi Nêf", which is "Fênix" (Wright's portuguese name) spelled backwards.

Development[]

Concept[]

The concept for Recipe for Turnabout was based on Shu Takumi's desire to have Phoenix Wright experience the cliché situations associated with hero stories, particularly the cliché of the evil imposter. When initial designs for this "fake Phoenix Wright" were drawn, Takumi decided that it would fit even better into the Ace Attorney world if he did not even look like the real Phoenix Wright outside of the silhouette. He was initially intended to be the overall main antagonist of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations and not appear much, but he ironically became more prominent as his role became limited to Recipe.[2]

Final design[]

  • Tigre has dark brown spiky hair styled just like Wright's but bigger. He has brown eyes, an orange tan complexion, and a huge scar over his left eye.
  • He was designed with an orange-red suit and gold chain to give him a more intimidating appearance.[3] His orange color scheme may also have been chosen in order to contrast with Wright's blue suit.
  • The image on his suit of a tiger biting down on a dragon is intimidating on its own, but makes more sense in the Japanese version. Wright's Japanese name is "Ryuuichi" (龍一), which alludes to the dragon, and Tigre's name is "Toranosuke" (roughly meaning "tiger boy"). In Eastern mythology, tigers are the eternal rivals of dragons and there are numerous artworks depicting dragons and tigers locked in an epic battle. A Chengyu (Chinese idiom) to describe equal rivals is "Dragon versus Tiger".
    • As a reference to this, before Maya Fey learns of the real name of Wright's imposter, she uses Wright's first name spelled backwards - "Xin Eohp" - as a placeholder.
  • Furio Tigre talks in a Brooklyn accent (e.g., "youse" instead of "you") and uses italianized terms (example: "dis" instead of "this"). In the Italian translation, he uses the letter "k" liberally throughout his sentences (a letter which is only used in Italian for loanwords, implying him to be foreign). In the original Japanese version he speaks with a Kansai accent.
  • The sound effect used for Tigre's roar is the same as that used for Regent, a tiger who appeared in Turnabout Big Top.

Miscellaneous[]

  • The accident is stated to have occurred "4 months ago" by Viola during the investigation, and "6 months ago" by Wright during the trial.
  • Of all culprits in the original Phoenix Wright trilogy (excluding those in trial-only episodes), Furio Tigre is unique in that he is the only one whom the player cannot have an interactive conversation with (using the Talk option on the Investigation (Talk/Examine/Move/Present) screen and/or selecting topics of conversation) during an investigation.
  • Godot was apparently the only one who knew from the start that Tigre was an impostor during Byrde's first trial, hence he did not act as prosecutor for the case, being uninterested in both facing a phony, as well as to clear up the deception.
