The "broken" pocket watch[]

Main article: Twisted Karma and His Last Bow

One day, one of Jabez's customers, a firecracker peddler under the pseudonym "Venus", presented to him a stopped pocket watch with a cracked glass frame that she wished to sell. After evaluating the item, Jabez quickly deemed it worthless and refused to buy it. Unbeknownst to him, the pocket watch actually belonged to recently-deceased Scotland Yard inspector Tobias Gregson, and it had merely stopped because it was never wound back up following his murder the day before.

Name[]

  • Jabez's given name is taken from the character Jabez Wilson in the Sherlock Holmes story "The Red-Headed League". The character in question is also a pawnbroker, and happens to be Holmes's client in the story.
