Wealth, fame, power. Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates, attained this and everything else the world had to offer. And his dying words drove countless souls to the seas. "You want my treasure? You can have it! I left everything I gathered together in one place! Now you just have to find it!" These words lured men to the Grand Line in pursuit of dreams greater than they've ever dared to imagine! This is the time known as the "Great Pirate Era"!

Skirmish with the CDAC

Jack Shipley's aquarium, Shipshape Aquarium, had a pirate-themed stage show, in which Azura Summers, an aquarium animal trainer, Ora Shipley, an aquarium orca, and himself all performed. Summers suffered a heart condition which threatened her life, but she did not tell anyone and carried out her usual duties in the aquarium. During one stage show, Summers was struck by a heart attack and fell into the water, whereupon Ora used her "lifesaver" trick to bring Summers to the surface in her mouth. Onlookers believed that Ora had bitten Summers to death, and as a result of this, the Center for Dangerous Animal Control (CDAC) demanded that both Ora and Orla Shipley, another aquarium orca, be put down. Shipley and resident veterinarian Herman Crab secretly moved Ora to the larger Supermarine Aquarium, and negotiated a deal with the CDAC to let Orla live. At this point, Summers' feisty protegé Sasha Buckler and Orla (who posed as the original Ora) had taken over Summers' and Ora's respective roles in the stage show.

Aquarium animal keeper Marlon Rimes nursed a deep grudge against Orla, as he believed her to be the same orca that had killed Azura Summers, his lover.

Shipley's death

In 2027, Rimes' feelings of hatred toward Orla reached their climax, resulting in a subsequent attempt to kill the orca. Orla was moved out of her usual orca pool and into the stage show pool during intensive cleaning, at which Rimes saw his chance. He was assigned to watch over Orla in the show pool room while the cleaning took place. He drained the water in the show pool in order to kill Orla, but at that point, Shipley walked in on Rimes. Shipley rushed to fill the pool again, but in doing so tripped and fell into the empty pool. Despite a rescue attempt by Rimes, he fell and died instantly from a brain contusion.

Rimes took advantage of Sasha Buckler to dispose of Shipley's body. Shipley had discovered that Buckler suffered the same heart condition as Summers, and thus was not allowing her to participate in the latest stage show. Buckler, determined to perform, conjured up a plot to force Shipley to revert to the old show by stealing a key prop. This key prop was a hollow skull-shaped rock, in which fake coins for the show were supposed to be stashed. Rimes put Shipley's body into the hollow rock and then gave Buckler the OK to take it into the orca pool room using a lift.

The following day, Rimes finished his plan. He noticed Norma DePlume, an aquarium visitor, wandering around near the first-floor visitor's corridor, which had a view of the orca pool. He used his walkie-talkie to pipe in a year-old recording of "Orla" (really Ora) singing a song, in order to attract DePlume's attention. He then used his aquarium TV phone, which had videos of Summers getting Ora to perform various tricks, to play a recording of Summers blowing a whistle in order to get Orla to perform her "lifesaver" trick. Orla, not being able to find the dummy she normally used for the trick, searched the pool and noticed an object in the skull rock. She started repeatedly head-butting it in order to get the foreign object out. Once Shipley's body was out of the rock, Orla then took Shipley in her mouth and carried him to the top of the orca pool. However, to DePlume, it seemed as if Orla had head-butted Shipley to death and then toyed with him by biting the corpse. DePlume rushed off to call the police, who, upon hearing DePlume's testimony, planned to euthanize Orla.

A desperate Sasha Buckler raced to the office of former lawyering legend Phoenix Wright, and without letting on that his prospective client was an orca, persuaded him to take the case. Once Wright got over the initial shock of an orca defendant, he investigated the aquarium and proved to Police Detective Bobby Fulbright that it could have been a human murder. The case was then taken to court.

Wright quickly got Orla acquitted, but suspicion fell upon Buckler herself due to the manner in which Orla had been manipulated by the culprit. However, Wright cross-examined Rimes and revealed his hatred of Orla, soon leading to a revelation of how the case really played out. However, Wright was able to help Rimes escape punishment by revealing how he had tried to save Shipley. Rimes went into rehabilitation for a few months and then returned to the aquarium, playing the role of the villain "Redstache" in the stage show, previously played by Shipley.

Name

  • His Japanese surname means "wild boat".
  • His first name is derived from the term used for warship flags, "Jacks," while his English surname is a play on the word "ship." His nickname of "Captain Jack" is likely a reference to the character Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Trivia

  • Shipley is the first character with the same first name as another character in the Ace Attorney series (Jack Hammer). Interestingly, both are the victim of their respective cases.
