Karuta cards were a piece of evidence in the trial of Bucky Whet for the murder of Taifu Toneido, and were found at the scene of Toneido's murder in the dressing room of the Kurukuru Tei theater. The cards spelled out "WHET NO 4" when found by the police, and it was initially believed that they were meant to implicate Bucky Whet (the fourth-generation chef of the "Whet Soba" noodle shop, hence "Whet No. 4") as Toneido's killer. However, Whet's defense attorney Athena Cykes used the soba broth stains on the cards to determine that they had been rearranged and initially spelled out "OWEN 4TH", implicating someone else.
