Kazuma Asogi's diary was evidence in Ryunosuke Naruhodo's investigation into an incident involving Asogi during his voyage on the SS Burya. Titled London Diary, Asogi chronicled the events of his journey, but was tragically cut short before he could make it to London.

On January 9, at 1:23 a.m., Asogi heard a whistling sound. Twelve minutes later, he saw a peculiar object poking out from the ventilator, which was connected to the cabin next door. While he was writing about the "speckled band" in the ventilator, he was interrupted when the passenger from said cabin visited him, explaining that she was trying to retrieve her cat Darka, who had run away to Asogi's cabin, using a whistling sound and a cat's toy, to no avail. Unfortunately, Asogi would never get to finish his diary entry, as a misunderstanding led to Asogi being pushed and falling to the floor. The next day, Asogi's lifeless body was found, and the ship's doctor would eventually report that he had broken his neck. Satoru Hosonaga, who was working undercover as Asogi's bodyguard, was devastated at this event.
Naruhodo and Susato Mikotoba found the diary on Asogi's desk, but Mikotoba insisted that they should not read Asogi's private thoughts, even if they might contain a clue. Later, Herlock Sholmes examined the diary, but since his knowledge of Japanese was lacking, Mikotoba read the last entry for him. Naruhodo showed the entry to Hosonaga, who agreed to let them investigate the neighbouring cabin and try to convince the captain that Naruhodo was just trying to determine the meaning of the "speckled band". The captain beat up Hosonaga in response. Meanwhile, Sholmes found a large snake and announced an erroneous conclusion that it had killed Asogi, but crewman Bif Strogenov revealed that the snake was his pet, named Pirozhko.
