Prosecutor Trophy

The King of Prosecutors trophy.

The King of Prosecutors Trophy is an annual award given to the top prosecutor from the prosecutor's office during a ceremony in late February. Miles Edgeworth won it in 2017 and, as can be assumed from its presence in his office two years later, won it at least once more. The only other known winners of the trophy are Manfred von Karma, who won it on numerous occasions, and Neil Marshall, who won it just before his death in 2015.

Background

The tale of the all-powerful spear and the indestructible shield.

There are two versions of the trophy. Originally, it consisted of a shield that was broken at the top and a spear that was broken in half. This was to allude to "contradiction" (矛盾) or 'máo dùn' in Chinese. which is composed of two characters: the first meaning "spear" (矛) or 'máo' and the second meaning "shield" (盾) or 'dùn'.

This comes from an old Chinese tale in "Han Feizi" about a weapons merchant attempting to peddle his wares. The ancient word of "weapons" was máo dùn (矛盾). He bragged that his shield could stop any attack and that his spear could pierce any armour. A passer-by then pointed out that this was a logical contradiction: what would happen if the spear were used on the shield? At this, the merchant was lost for words. As the result, the word 'máo dùn' (矛盾) now means "contradiction". Since that time, a person who contradicts himself is described as 'zì xiāng máo dùn'  (自相矛盾)

In the version told by Miles Edgeworth, the merchant was peddling his wares to the king. There are two versions of the trophy. Originally, The King of Prosecutors Trophy consisted of a shield that was broken at the top and a spear that was broken in half which pictured the merchant's spear and shield.

However, as of year 2015, the trophy's spear was removed following the SL-9 Incident possibly by Chief of Police Damon Gant due it being a possible murder weapon.
