A memo written by Horace Knightley was a piece of evidence in Miles Edgeworth's investigation into Knightley's murder. It later reappeared as correspondence chess memo in Edgeworth's investigation into the murder of Di-Jun Huang.

Knightley's murder

Prior to his death, Knightley played chess with Simon Keyes even after being detained in a holding cell in the detention center. Unbeknownst to him, Keyes had secretly made him play against Sirhan Dogen as part of his plan for revenge.

Later, Edgeworth found the memo in Knightley's cell. He soon deduced that Dogen had been playing chess against Knightley, as the positions matched with the chessboard in Dogen's special cell. He later used it to prove that there was a connection between Knightley and Dogen, namely, the fact that they were correspondence chess opponents. Later, he used it to show that Warden Patricia Roland would have seen a connection between Knightley and Dogen, as she had been checking Dogen's mail and would've seen the fact that Knightley and Dogen were playing chess against each other.

Huang's murder 

Main article: The Grand Turnabout

Edgeworth added the memo to his organizer after Dogen told him that he played correspondence chess with the mastermind. Afterwards, he used it to show the contradiction between Dogen's claim that the letters were in braille and the memo: the memo had not been written in braille. This revealed the existence of a middleman who had translated the letters. Later, he used it to show the connection of the mastermind to the case.

Note

The game position depicted on the memo is identical to one reached by an exhibition match from 2002. That match ends with White resigning after 68 moves. Knightley, who plays White, was killed after this position was reached.
