Kumiko Suekane is a Japanese artist and former Capcom employee who designed the characters for Viewtiful Joe and, alongside Tatsuro Iwamoto, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. She is currently a mangaka whose titles include Afterschool Charisma, a manga about an ordinary student who enrolls at an exclusive school where all of the other students are clones of famous historical figures such as Beethoven, Queen Elizabeth I, Napoleon, Mozart, and Freud. Suekane also creates yaoi doujinshi under the pseudonym Ryo Mutobe.
Biography[]
Suekane first started drawing illustrations in kindergarten. In high school, she got the lowest score in her class on a math test, and started thinking about pursuing art as a profession. She started drawing comics at age 20.[1]
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney[]
Suekane is responsible for much of the graphical work in the original Game Boy Advance version of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, including character designs, backgrounds, the logo, and the original Objection! speech bubble. She was given no direction for the character designs, so she poured her own ideas into the designs, "so women can accept the male characters, and men the female characters." Miles Edgeworth was the first character whom she designed, and she was adamant about him being similar in age to Phoenix Wright, rather than being an older man as was being pitched at the time. Wright himself was the hardest character for her to design. She also suggested that Mia Fey should be Wright's mentor, rather than just Maya Fey's sister who dies.[1]
