The Kurain Channeling Technique is the spirit channeling technique practiced by the Fey clan of spirit mediums from Kurain Village. The leader of the family is known as the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, with Maya Fey being the current holder.
The Kurain Channeling Technique is the spirit channeling technique used by Kurain Village and the mediums within. The current Master of Kurain Village is the "keeper" of the technique, so to speak. Normally, the position of the Master is passed on by blood, but in rare instances, another medium may "usurp" the title of Master if their spriritual power exceeds that of the person positioned to become Master. Misty Fey doing this to her sister Morgan Fey is one example. If a would-be Master is robbed of the position, she and her family are demoted to the status of a branch family, who are forever indentured to the main family (in other words, the direct bloodline of the current Master). The Kurain Technique plays an important role in several of Phoenix Wright's cases as an attorney.

Mia Fey was one person who decided to abandon the path of a medium, choosing to become a defense attorney instead. Bravely, she took on the the case of an escaped death row convict against the debuting prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. While she came very close to proving her client's innocence and cornering the true culprit, her client took the stand and effectively commited suicide by drinking poison given to him by said real culprit. The case would leave Fey emotionally traumatized, and she would not take another one until one year later.

When a Fey performs the Kurain Channeling Technique, her body transforms into a likeness of the person she channels. This change extends to her voice and physical appearance, although her hair and clothes remain the same. From this point, the channeled spirit takes control of the body and the medium loses consciousness and is unaware of anything the spirit does during the channeling. This unconsciousness is complete, unlike regular sleep in which people dream.

It is unknown to what extent the physical changes can occur, as although height, figure and voice change, Phoenix Wright has only seen female spirits being channeled. The only mentioned case of a member of the clan channeling a male spirit is that of Gregory Edgeworth and this was not shown. A male medium couldn't perform the channeling as only female members of the clan inherit the ability to use the technique.
Fey next took the case of university student Phoenix Wright, who had been accused of murdering fellow student Doug Swallow. This time, Fey was able to turn the case completely on its head without interruptions. In a fortunate twist of fate, it developed that the true culprit in the case she had taken one year ago and the true culprit in her current case were one and the same. This time, Fey cornered her on the stand and got her client an acquittal.

By 2016, Mia Fey had matured and started her own firm, Fey & Co. Law Offices. She employed Wright there, and acted as his co-counsel during his first case. For some time now, she had been gathering information in secret on Redd White and his firm, Bluecorp. She had reason to suspect, and was almost certain, that White and his company achieved their ends through blackmail and bribes, all under the guise of a slightly unconventional "detective agency of sorts". White learned of this by having his secretary, April May, tap Fey's phone and listen in on her using the tap. He consequently murdered Fey, stole most of the items concerning him or Bluecorp in her possesion, and framed Mia's own little sister Maya for the deed. Wright took the case as Maya's attorney, and indicted White on the stand. However, despite the victory, the case had left a blow that would never fade; Wright's mentor had died.

Channeled after death
It would very soon transpire that Mia was not, and would never be, gone. During the trial, Wright looked at the space beside him where the co-counsel would normally be, and, seeing his late mentor, fainted. He awoke in the defendant lobby, once again to the face of Mia. He fainted again, but not for long this time. As he observed, Mia changed from Mia into a slightly altered version of Maya. The Maya/Mia hybrid patiently explained the concept of spirit channeling, and provided Wright with the key evidence that he needed to discredit the testimony of White and win the trial.

The spirit generally leaves voluntarily. However, according to Morgan Fey, it is possible to remove a spirit and send it back to the afterlife without its consent, by using the "Spirit Severing Technique". It is unknown what this technique entails as it was only mentioned once and never actually used at that time. The technique may even be a fabrication used by Morgan to cover up the truth behind a murder. Regardless of the existence of such a technique, one example of a spirit leaving involuntarily is when Dahlia Hawthorne's spirit was mocked by Mia Fey until she vacated her host.
Mia would not be channeled very frequently for the remainder of Wright's early career, due to Maya's general ineptitude at spirit channeling. However, after meeting Maya's little cousin Pearl Fey, Mia began to be channeled much more frequently, thanks to Pearl's prodigious channeling ability, which was despite her being the youngest member of the Fey clan. Pearl is also notable for charging Wright's magatama with spiritual energy and teaching him how to break Psyche-Locks using said magatama.

The Kurain Sacred Writings on the folding screen in Fey Manor's Channeling Chamber contain six lines related to channeling.
During his investigation into Glen Elg's murder, Wright clashed with Victor Kudo, who was an eye witness to the crime, and could offer testimony as such, but was not willing to. By breaking some Psyche-Locks, Wright was able to figure out that Kudo was the only regular at Trés Bien, the scene of the crime, but went only to look at the waitresses there. With this knowledge, Wright contacted Maya, who was in a short stint as a waitress at the time. He took her to Kudo, but the old man remarked that Maya was too young to be attractive. However, he became much more cooperative after Maya (having returned to Kurain Village and trained as a medium for some time) channeled her older sister, gladly giving lots of information.

Not so long after the concept had been introduced, the Technique would become the centerpiece for a murder. Maya was contacted by Dr. Turner Grey, director of Grey Surgical Clinic, to call the spirit of Mimi Miney, a nurse at the clinic who had recently died in a car crash. The reason he wanted to call the spirit was because, one year ago, Miney had been involved in a malpractice incident at the clinic. Miney had mixed up the medications of 14 patients and subsequently killed them, just a week before she died in the crash. Grey was intending to make her write a signed document taking full responsibility for both accidents, as he had been receiving lots of bad publicity due to them. However, all was not as it seemed. In reality, Mimi's sister Ini Miney, who had supposedly survived the crash, was actually Mimi. It was truly Ini that had died, but as Mimi's face was burned beyond recognition, she told the surgeons operating on her that she was Ini, and her face was reconstructed as such. She realized that her cover would be blown if Maya tried to channel her and failed, so she entered the Channeling Chamber, murdered Grey, and framed Maya for the deed by knocking her unconscious, stuffing her in a clothes trunk, and putting on her bloodstained acolyte clothes, making eye-witnesses including Wright believe she was indeed Maya. However, Wright once again took the case of Maya, and turned it on its head as usual, exposing "Ini" Miney on the stand, revealing her to really be Mimi and proving her guilt in one stroke. Maya was subsequently cleared.

There are six lines to the Sacred Writings. Cleanse thy soul... Open the door to the spiritual realm beyond... Converse with the departed... ...Cast on thyself Protection... Maintain the spell... Release the spell...

The Kurain Channeling Technique is the spirit channeling technique practiced by the Fey clan of spirit mediums from Kurain Village. The leader of the family is known as the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, with Maya Fey being the current holder.

How the technique works

Miamaya

Mia Fey being channeled by Maya Fey.

One limitation of the technique is that two people may not simultaneously channel the same spirit. However, one medium can "steal" a spirit from a less powerful medium,[1] as well as prevent a less powerful medium from channeling a spirit by channeling it herself.

The Kurain Sacred Writings on the folding screen in Fey Manor's Channeling Chamber contain six lines related to channeling.
