Bodhidharma Kanis's bells were a piece of evidence in Miles Edgeworth's investigation into the murder of Bronco Knight.
Knight's murder[]
Prior to Kanis's incarceration, the bells were used as his trademark, with one being attached to his knife and the other being attached to his dog, Helmut. They were also custom made and gave a unique ring. However, upon his incarceration, his knife was confiscated with the bell attached. Fifi Laguarde often brought the knife with her into the prison whenever she was trying to interrogate Kanis in order to find his henchmen, as well as when new prisoners entered in order to know if they were Kanis's henchmen. During one of the interrogations, where she was interrogating Knight, she found a chisel in his Pocket Chess Set. As the chisel was a symbol of Kanis to her due to his taking up wood carving in prison, she panicked, thinking Knight was one of Kanis's henchmen. This caused her to stab Knight with Kanis's knife.
After killing Knight, Laguarde untied Kanis's bell from the knife and tied it to the chisel. She then stuck the chisel in Knight's wound, creating a red herring that pointed the blame at Kanis. She then sent the body to Kanis under the guise of goods she was supposed to deliver to Kanis that day. Upon the body's arrival, Kanis heard the sound of the bell and, recognizing it as his bell, assumed his knife had been used for the murder. Upon discovering it to be a chisel, however, Kanis hid it in his cell and had Helmut leave the body in Workroom A.
Later, Edgeworth added information about the bells to his organizer after Kanis mentioned them. He later used it to show another way for weapons to be brought into the prison: as confiscated evidence.
