Soseki Natsume's room in Garrideb's Flats during his stay in London.
Selden[]

Selden.
The first known resident of the flat was a notorious criminal from Manchester named Selden. While living there, he stashed items he had stolen, particularly a dog collar said to be worth a thousand pounds, in a secret compartment in the ceiling. He was eventually charged with eighteen counts of robbery and six counts of murder and sentenced to death, forcing him to leave his stash abandoned. Before his death, Selden told the secret of his loot to a fellow prisoner, William Shamspeare, and gave him the key to his hiding place.
Duncan Ross[]
Duncan Ross.
The next resident of the flat was an art student named Duncan Ross. He was saving up for his wedding and was interested in the room due to the cheap rent and interesting history.
William Shamspeare, wishing to reclaim Selden's stash, approached Garrideb to request the flat, but was turned down, as Ross occupied the room already. Instead, Shamspeare settled for the ground floor flat and concocted a plan to scare Ross out of the room. He would blow into his gas pipe in the middle of the night, causing gas leaks and nearly suffocating Ross several times. A rumor began to circulate that the flat was haunted by Selden's spirit and he was the cause of the nighttime suffocation incidents.
Ross's fiancé, Olive Green, feared for his life and begged him to move out. He relented, promising to search for a better apartment, only to die in a gas leak that very night. Following the investigation into his death, Garrideb replaced the gas pipes in the entire building. Shamspeare once again asked to move into the flat, but as he was three months behind on rent, Garrideb refused.
Soseki Natsume[]

Soseki Natsume.
The final known resident of the flat was an exchange student from Japan named Soseki Natsume, who was searching for cheap lodging so he could spend the rest of his stipend on books. Shamspeare once again began to blow into the pipes, causing Natsume to believe the room was cursed. He complained to Garrideb, but his concerns were dismissed, since the pipes had already been replaced.
Green, heartbroken over Ross's death, continued to walk by his old building. One day, she followed Natsume to a restaurant out of curiosity and overheard his complaint about the "cursed" lodgings. Recognizing his experience was identical to Ross's, she grew suspicious of Shamspeare. In an attempt to disprove her suspicions, she put poison on the gas pipe, where he would ingest it if he tried blowing again.
Once the truth came out in court, Herlock Sholmes and his friends uncovered Selden's stash. Sholmes recognized the collar, and, fearful the truth about the Professor case may be uncovered, allowed Tobias Gregson to take it. He forbid Iris from writing about the case of the haunted lodgings in hopes she wouldn't look into it further.
After Natsume moved out, the curse rumors got worse, and no one moved into the flat.
