The incident occurred inside an omnibus driven by Beppo. Inside the carriage were the victim, Magnus McGilded, and Gina Lestrade, who was hidden in a storage compartment underneath McGilded's seat. Bruce Fairplay and Lay D. Furst sat on the roof deck. Just after the stabbing, McGilded discovered Lestrade and sat her next to Milverton's body, where she saw that blood was still seeping out from the wound. Eventually, Fairplay and Furst also saw the body, though Lestrade managed to hide away again and eventually escape unnoticed.
After the incident, Furst developed a fear of knives, screaming in terror upon seeing one, even while eating. He and the other known passengers were called to testify in McGilded's trial for the murder. Van Zieks presented the knife during the cross-examination, and Furst could instantly identify it as the murder weapon. It was an ornate knife with an "M" insignia on it, something that could not possibly have been in the possession of the poor Milverton, making it certain that it belonged to McGilded.
