The Nine-tailed Fox is a member of a unique species of mythological multi-tailed foxes that feature in the legends of Nine-Tails Vale. According to said legends, it fought and defeated Tenma Taro and sealed it away in the Forbidden Chamber. However the legend of this particular Nine-Tailed Fox and Tenma Taro was revealed to have been made up as part of a ploy to deter thieves looking to steal the large gold ingot that the village possessed.

The Nine-tailed Fox is based upon the kitsune of Japanese mythology. According to the legends about these creatures, the more tails a kitsune has, the older, wiser, and more powerful it is; the most they can have are nine.
