Marī Miwa was the director of the prison and the detention center. She was an animal lover who believed in animal therapy. She was important to the case because her cooperation was vital into advancing into the investigation. She called the prison her "home".

Involvement in SS-5

Miwa & Pals.

As the director of the "Happy Family" orphanage, she collaborated with the corrupt prosecutor, Bansai Ichiyanagi, and the body double of the president of Zheng Fa, Teikun Ō, in the fake kidnapping of the president, which they planned in order to have him assassinated and replaced by the imposter. They hired the blind assassin, Ryōken Hōinbō, to carry out the deed. Miwa and Ichiyanagi disposed of the president's corpse. They planned to betray Hōinbō but they were overheard by one of the boys at the orphanage, Sōta Sarushiro, who saved Hōinbō. Ichiyanagi then killed a reporter who witnessed the incident. To cover up their tracks, they would place his corpse where Ō died. They erased all the photos on his camera and made a new one showing Ichiyanagi dressed in a coat pointing a pistol at Ō's imposter, which was supposed to take away any suspicion from the orphanage.

Miwa was the only suspect in the case. However, Ichiyanagi was the one set to prosecute it, so he manipulated the evidence and blamed the investigation team led by Dai-Long Lang for it. Miwa was declared not guilty and the case went cold. She found out about Sarushiro's drawing of the incident, but he was too afraid of her to testify. She later became the director of both the prison and the detention center, thanks to her connections.

Manosuke Naitō's murder

Investigation

Main article: The Imprisoned Turnabout

Miwa was first seen in the prison of where the crime was committed and gave them permission to investigate the crime scene and continue the investigation. She was greeted by Tateyuki Shigaraki and she gave him a hug and a kiss when he only asked for a hug. Later, she appeared at Hōinbō's cell with two guards, one of them revealed to be Shūji Orinaka. After Edgeworth's investigation of the courtyard, he confronted Miwa about the murder.

Interrogating Hōinbō.

At the end of the case, Miwa was proven guilty of killing Naitō. Her motive was that Hōinbō had threatened her and her family, claiming that he still has many "dogs" roaming free, and that these subordinates would kill her. As a result, Miwa became paranoid day and night. Miwa bowed to his whims, while at the same time tried to help the police catch Hōinbō's subordinates in order to free herself from his influence. But Hōinbō never gave up anything in their interrogations. She falsely confirmed that Naitō was one of them, since he was admitted to the prison with a concealed weapon (the knife with the bell), she panicked and she killed him with the knife she had on loan from the police before he could "kill" her.

Threatened by Hōinbō.

Making the best of her situation, she tried to frame Hōinbō for the murder in the hope that he would at least get transferred to another prison and leave her alone. She dumped Naitō's body down a well in the courtyard, knowing that Hōinbō's dog Kuro would come get it, thus pinning the blame on him. In order to prevent herself from being arrested, Miwa hid the murder weapon, the knife she found on Naitō, in her pet alligator's pool in the courtyard, as no one would dare to go near it. Also, one of the inmates, Frank Sahwit, helped her create a false alibi. However, his testimony was easily disproved by Edgeworth, and thanks to Gumshoe's metal detector, the knife with her fingerprints was found and she was proved guilty.

Trial

Main article: The Grand Turnabout

Later, she was put on trial for the murder, with Franziska von Karma being the prosecutor and Tateyuki Shigaraki as her defense attorney. However, the trial was cut short due to the lack of evidence. After the investigation, Yumihiko Ichiyanagi was supposed to handle the evidence against her. Unfortunately, he gave it to his father who threw it away as trash, in order to cover for Miwa. However, it was then recovered by young Ichiyanagi, thus allowing Von Karma to convict Miwa for good.

In the end, it turned out that Sōta Sarushiro had set the whole thing up so he could get revenge on Naitō and he could get away since Miwa killed Naitō out of fear.

Bad Pearl This article is under construction. While it is not short, it still needs expansion as outlined in the manual of style. The article most likely needs expansion near the end of the tagged section or sections.

Miwa had a habit of greeting everybody with a a hug and a kiss. She kissed Shigaraki when he asked for a hug, much to his dismay. However, her loving and caring personality was only a guise for her more sinister side. She was well capable of committing crime and even threatening children. She quickly became cold and apathetic when accused. Miwa was easily intimidated herself as evidenced by the influence Hōinbō had over her. She became increasingly paranoid when he threatened to have her killed. In the end, she literally went insane from paranoia during her breakdown.

Name

  • Her name comes from mimawari, which means patrol.

Development

  • She wears a white fox around her neck. It is very much alive and it usually copies her facial expressions. At one point she even speaks through her pet animal.
  • She also wears a fur coat which, as it turns out, also consists of live foxes. They jump off her during her breakdown revealing a blue-white shirt underneath, similar to the one's the prisoners are wearing.
