John Garrideb's pipe was evidence in the trial of Soseki Natsume for the stabbing of Olive Green.
A miraculous collision[]

During a marital dispute between Joan Garrideb and her husband John, Joan started throwing various objects at John. This included one of their folding knives, which hit John's pipe, breaking it in half and knocking it out of his hand. John found the pipe afterward and bandaged it together, allowing its continued use. Later, Ryunosuke Naruhodo and Susato Mikotoba visited the Garrideb house to look for information and evidence to help Soseki Natsume, who had been arrested on charges of stabbing Olive Green nearby. Through this, they found out about the Garridebs' dispute.
Joan served as one of the jurors in Natsume's trial, and watched as Naruhodo proposed a highly unlikely possibility that the knife used to stab Green, which was missing its tip, had been thrown out from the Garridebs' window during their fight. Joan internally feared that he was right, but counted on him being unable to produce evidence, as the knife was just one of many that they owned, and neither Garrideb could remember such exact details of their fight. Nonetheless, Naruhodo found a metal fragment embedded inside John's pipe, which matched exactly with the knife, proving his miraculous theory.
