A postmortem report was evidence in Ryunosuke Naruhodo's investigation into an incident involving Kazuma Asogi on board the SS Burya. Written by the ship's doctor, it stated that Asogi had broken his neck, and that no traces of external injury or poison had been found.

After the crew had discovered Asogi unconscious and taken him away from his cabin, Herlock Sholmes convinced them to treat Asogi as dead and deliver him to the Hong Kong port as a murdered corpse.[1]

Satoru Hosonaga received the report as soon as it was written, and gave a copy to Naruhodo, hoping that it would provide a clue as to what had really happened to Asogi. Naruhodo used it to rule out Sholmes's claim that Asogi had fallen victim to a venomous bite from a snake.

Naruhodo never found out how the report's conclusions had been drawn, only knowing that the ship's doctor was inexperienced in postmortem analysis. The absence of poison was the main important detail used to solve the case, but it would later turn out that Asogi had survived the incident that had supposedly resulted in a fatal neck injury. He and Susato Mikotoba figured that maybe the crew had made a mistake, but Sholmes had to have intentionally deceived them. Sholmes would eventually explain to them that he had told the crew to treat the incident as a murder.
