A red raincoat was a piece of evidence in Miles Edgeworth's investigation into the murder of Bastian Rook. It later reappeared during the investigation into the murder of Rosie Ringer.

Attempt on Wang's life[]

Main article: Turnabout Trigger

During Di-Jun Wang's speech, Shelly de Killer had planned to attempt another assassination on the president. To disguise himself, he wore the raincoat. However, he spotted a second red-hooded figure pointing a laser at the president. Knowing he would be suspected once police arrived to investigate, he hastily removed the raincoat, dropping a button in the process. He then stuffed it underneath the Samurai Dog stand, but was unable to leave the scene due to the sheer amount of people and the police's arrival.

Later on, Edgeworth discovered the raincoat where de Killer had left it. It allowed him to deduce that the assassin had an injured left arm soon after, allowing him and Dick Gumshoe to find and accuse "John Doe" (de Killer's alias) for the crime. He later used it to prove that the owner of the raincoat was injured. He later handed it, along with the other evidence, to Bronco Knight temporarily, as President Wang meant for the Zheng Fa police to take over the investigation. However, after Edgeworth negotiated with Wang to return the investigative authority to him, Knightley returned it along with the remaining evidence.

The black market auctions[]

Main article: A Turnabout Forsaken

Sometime between March 26 and April 4, the raincoat was stolen from evidence and hidden in the 51st floor of the Bigg Building. However, on April 4, Excelsius Winner mortally wounded Rosie Ringer and coerced Florence Niedler to disguise as her by changing into her clothes and wearing a wig. Niedler felt that leaving the seemingly dead Ringer naked was rather shameful, and so she covered her with the raincoat. However, Ringer was actually still alive, and so left the hidden floor for the tower's roof garden with the raincoat on her, before truly succumbing to her wounds, being spotted by Kay Faraday during her brief wandering. Upon being found by Winner and Niedler, the latter discarded the raincoat to prevent the former from realizing what she'd done, while also arranging the scene in order to pin the blame on the newly arrived Faraday, who due to the shock of seeing the victim's collapse, had fallen in the ladder's hole and was knocked unconscious.

The police later found the raincoat in the vicinity of the Bigg Building. Edgeworth used it to prove that something was wrong with the autopsy report, as if the victim had been stabbed with the candelabrum first, the raincoat would have three holes in the left chest area, which it didn't.
