A day before having to meet up with Furio Tigre to discuss his gambling debts, Elg had gotten into a fight with a co-worker, which blew out his left eardrum. He was later prescribed the medicine and brought it with him to Trés Bien. Tigre murdered him and hid the body in the kitchen, where the medicine bottle slipped out landed in Jean Armstrong's box of scented oils. Maggey Byrde was tried and convicted for the murder.

A month later, Byrde was granted a retrial, and her attorney, Phoenix Wright, investigated the murder, and found the bottle while searching the kitchen for his magatama. It was the only bottle that did not have a smell, so he gave it to Dick Gumshoe to have it analyzed. On the second day of the trial, Gumshoe told Wright that it was Elg's ear medicine, but fingerprint analysis had not been finished. By the time the analysis was finished, however, the trial had progressed to the point that it did not matter that Tigre's fingerprints were on them. Wright nonetheless claimed in court that it was the bottle of potassium cyanide used to murder Elg, tricking Tigre into angrily correcting him. Tigre stated that the poison was in a brown glass bottle, a fact that had not been brought up while Tigre had been summoned to the witness stand, proving that he was the real killer.
