Surely this should be The Great Ace Attorney? Will change if there are no meaningful objections within a week. Mkbw50 (talk) 23:51, January 9, 2015 (UTC)

Why should it be? Was there an official announcement of an English title that I'm unaware of? - Strabo412 (talk) 23:55, January 9, 2015 (UTC)

A new trailer has been released , which presents the five cases in the game with their corresponding English titles. Should we update the case list to reflect that?180.191.150.137 18:34, June 29, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out! capefeather (talk) 18:56, June 29, 2015 (UTC)

SequelEdit

So this happened.... Is it time to start a new page for DGS2? ~ FenriDarkWolf ~ (talk) 09:16, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd say so. It's Ace Attorney related even though we'll never get to play it.... SolidSonicTH (talk) 11:33, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Fan TranslationEdit

I heard they're making a fan translation of this game. I'm just trying to figure out what japanese named could be changed to english names, only the japanese characters those.

We know Wright and Payne, and I guess we might leave Sōseki Natsume alone, but any ideas for the other English names?Whitehorse24 (talk) 02:29, May 21, 2017 (UTC)Whitehorse24

  • I thought they were just going to be leaving all the Japanese names as-is. There's no real need to change them... considering the Japanese characters ARE in Japan. ~ FenrirDarkWolf ~ (talk) 19:52, May 21, 2017 (UTC)
  • I don't think translating the names in English is a good idea, since the characters are from Japan. Furthermore, Natsume is an actual person who existed, so he would stay as-is either way. However, some puns are lost when the names are left as-is, since they're only/more easily understandable in Japanese. I think the best idea would've been to find Japanese-esque names that have puns that work in English. That's what the French fan translation team plans to do, making understandable puns and names that also work in Japanese and in correlation to the original names' meanings. • But all games originally take place in Japan, until they were made in America. Plus, the game takes place near the end of the 19th century, so America existed. Like I said, we leave off Sōseki Natsume since he's real. But for Ryūnosuke I was thinking one of Phoenix original idea names: Roger, Pierce, Xavier, Marcus, Zane, Cole, Wilton, one of those.Whitehorse24 (talk) 23:17, May 22, 2017 (UTC)Whitehorse24
    • Except the game blatantly takes place in Japan in case 1. The courts from the original games look generic enough that it wouldn't look out of place in most modern countries, so localizing it to America isn't so difficult. However, the style of the DGS case 1 courtroom is a traditional Japanese, most of the Japanese characters are wearing kimonos and Auchi has that fan thingy. Unless you're suggesting that 19th century America copied its designs off Japan and that the Paynes' ancestor was a hipster otaku, which is highly unlikely in the first place, it would make no sense. Furthermore, part of the reason Natsume acts the way he does with the main characters is because they too are Japanese, and the first Japanese people he's seen in England for a long time. If they weren't Japanese, why would he be so happy to see them? If they're American, what difference does it make to him? They still speak English like the British, and they're not the first people from his country he sees. That's just one of the things that wouldn't make sense if Ryuunosuke was American in the localization. Aeliren (talk) 12:04, May 23, 2017 (UTC)

The team working on the unofficial localization isn't changing any of the names at all, other than interpreting the katakana for the English names a little (I don't know how much they're relying on fandom-established spellings). They've said as much both on forum threads on the subject and on the Court Records discord. I personally think that they should change the English names since there's ample precedent for it in official localizations (especially the Layton crossover) and there's no obvious issue like with the Japanese characters as far as I know. Arguments about this always seem to be focused on the Japanese characters, and they're obviously putting a lot of effort into localizing graphics already. I'm not part of the team, though, so that's just my opinion and I can't do anything about their insistence that the discussion is over. capefeather (talk) 03:38, May 23, 2017 (UTC)

  • Well, then why did they change names for prosecutors path?Whitehorse24 (talk) 13:59, May 24, 2017 (UTC)Whitehorse24
That was a different team. capefeather (talk) 15:22, May 24, 2017 (UTC)
...So?Whitehorse24 (talk) 19:12, May 26, 2017 (UTC)Whitehorse24
So, it was a different team. CrashBash (talk) 18:52, May 27, 2017 (UTC)
