The Tangaroa Group is a pharmaceutical company known for products such as the Coldkiller X medicine and the Infesticide Ultra pesticide. In 2000, it developed a cure to the dissociated taste disorder and the similiar ageusia. It is named after the Tangaroa family, led by the parents of the confectioner Samson Tangaroa until their deaths. Tangaroa still inherited the company as chair until his incarceration in 2000 for the murder of Artie Frost.
The quest for the Ultimate Cookbook[]
In 2000, Tangaroa inherited a book from his parents. The book contained procedures for developing experimental drugs, including Infesticide Ultra and a cure to the dissociated taste disorder and the worse ageusia. As part of the description of Infesticide Ultra, as it cointains the dangerous Asphyxion, the book also mentioned that mixing it with Ubiquium would produce a toxic gas. Tangaroa did not want to give the book to just anyone, so he decided to use it as a prize in a dessert competition in December, so that he could give it to someone whom he respected as a confectioner. The Tangaroa Group objected to this, seeking to keep the book to itself, and sent pharmacist Delicia Scone to compete in the competition and retrieve the book. Judy Bound, Tangaroa's adopted daughter, secretly helped Scone with her entries, believing that it was in everyone's best interest for the "Ultimate Cookbook" to remain in the Tangaroa Group's possession. The Ultimate Cookbook was contained in a chocolate picture frame for every participant to see.
Tangaroa and Scone made it into the finals along with two other competitors: sculptor Artie Frost, who was also a famous sculptor under the pseudonym "Paul Halique", and Carmelo Gusto. Scone was not the only cheater in the contest, as the other two finalists collaborated with each other to compensate for the areas in which each was lacking. However, Frost betrayed Gusto in the finals, cutting off the collaboration after being given the frozen sherbet that he needed to finish his entry. This betrayal culminated in a confrontation when Frost caught the desperate Gusto trying to take pictures of the Ultimate Cookbook, leading to a scuffle that resulted in Gusto killing Frost. Although Gusto initially tried to frame Scone, who had been caught using inedible props, for the murder, Tangaroa ended up taking the fall. Gregory Edgeworth and Eddie Fender took up Tangaroa's case, but due to the machinations of prosecution legend Manfred von Karma and Chief Prosecutor Excelsius Winner, his client was found guilty of being an accomplice to the murder.
The Tangaroa Group retrieved the Ultimate Cookbook after the trial, and Bound was kicked out of Tangaroa's mansion. Bound spent the next 18 years earning money through an acting career so that she could buy back the mansion and the Ultimate Cookbook. After doing so, she converted the mansion into an art gallery and set up a poison gas trap for the real killer so that Tangaroa could be exonerated. The trap worked, sparking an investigation involving Gregory's son Miles and all of the players still alive from the IS-7 Incident.
Winner tried to use his influence in the Committee for Prosecutorial Excellence to take Edgeworth out of the investigation, but due to the ties that he had to both the defense attorney and the prosecutor in Tangaroa's trial, he was allowed to continue investigating. Eventually, he found out what Bound had done, and confronted Gusto. A trapped Gusto tried to wriggle out of his predicament by pointing out that the statute of limitations on the IS-7 case had run out, meaning he could not be convicted. However, Edgeworth revealed that Tangaroa had only been convicted as an accomplice to murder charge, meaning that the statute of limitations was extended for a year if the culprit could not be found. Gusto was subsequently brought to justice.
Notes[]
- The Tangaroa Group's most popular product, Coldkiller X, made its series debut ahead of the company itself, having first appeared in Turnabout Memories, and has been since then mentioned multiple times.
