Owing to the lack of an official translation of the Japan-only Gyakuten Kenji 2, the information and names in this article come from the unofficial English translation patch known as Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth: Prosecutor's Path. More information on this can be found here. If you have personal experience with the item of media in question, you can help the Ace Attorney Wiki by improving on this article. This is a unified timeline of the world of Ace Attorney, comprising all of the non-crossover adventure games involving controlling various protagonists as they solve mysteries. To be more precise, these games are as follows:
- The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures
- The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations
- Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
- Gyakuten Kenji 2
- Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice
Please note that some of the dates used are extrapolations (e.g., "two weeks after Phoenix Wright's disbarment" becomes "May 3") and may not be exactly correct. Nonetheless, it's unlikely that the true dates will ever be pinned down.
Exclusions[]
The Ace Attorney franchise has extended beyond the aforementioned games, including many crossovers, cameo appearances, musicals, films, manga, and the like. However, they are generally considered to be in separate, usually self-contained, timelines. One prominent example is Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which is explicitly stated to be "set in a parallel world"[1] and lacks information on dates, which the other games in the series all have. Two other examples are the manga series Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth by Kodansha Comics, which are impossible to place due to various circumstances surrounding Miles Edgeworth and Franziska von Karma in the periods in which the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney manga could have taken place.
"Modern" timeline[]
The years used for the "modern" timeline (excluding The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles) are based on the full date given on a DL-6 Incident case summary file, with all other events being portrayed as relative to other dates as opposed to having a definite point of occurrence. The murder of Gregory Edgeworth is recorded as having occurred on December 28, 2001. By the statute of limitations, an unsolved case is closed permanently 15 years after its opening, putting the final resolution of the incident at December 28, 2016. This method of generating timeline dates is generally corroborated by Gyakuten Taizen 2001-2016 as well as a poster seen for Trucy in Gramarye-Land in The Magical Turnabout, whose days of the week match up with the year 2028, which is consistent when adding up the years between it and the final resolution of DL-6.
Complications[]
The developers of the Ace Attorney games, in particular the people in charge of putting down the ages of characters in the court record, have not paid much attention to any absolute timeline. This is evident in the fact that characters' ages do not change within a game (except during "flashback" cases), even when a new year passes by. This has led to some inconsistencies in character birthdates. The timeline for this page treats the "present" timeline of an individual game as a "year" (much like school terms that straddle the new year), which resolves some of these issues. More information on this can be found here.
The Great Ace Attorney timeline[]
The two The Great Ace Attorney games include several events both in real life and in the Sherlock Holmes stories, and takes creative liberties with them and their occurrences relative to each other. For example, the real-life Natsume Sōseki lives in England for three years, while the in-game version only stays for one. As such, years are written relative to the present-day events of the games, which in total take place over the course of almost precisely a year. Of note is that some characters' ages change between the two games but others' don't. This is treated as the characters having their birthdays in the intervening time; that is, their ages in the second game are used to determine their birth years.
Notably, like with the modern timeline, some of the events can be dated using "Meiji years" (see Wikipedia:Japanese era name and Wikipedia:Meiji era), based on a date given on John Wilson's postmortem report, dated "Meiji 34". However, many births and some referenced historical events predate the Meiji period, rendering this calendar insufficient for dating them (if they were to be dated based on previous real-life Japanese eras, the required time span would include the reigns of two emperors across nine eras).
Birthdays[]
A handful of characters' birthdays have been confirmed in the games and are listed here:
- Dustin Prince: September 6, 1987 (murdered on his 30th birthday)
- Paul Atishon: July 11, 2002 (the numbers on his internet handle PAW-711 refer to his birthday)
- Rayfa Padma Khura'in: December 24, 2013 (her birthday is used as the code to open a safe belonging to her father Inga)
- An unnamed individual who is the younger brother's wife's younger brother of one of Shi-Long Lang's subordinates: March 14
The two The Great Ace Attorney games involve or mention several characters who exist in real life and thus would have birthdays known from real life. They are not included here.
