The years used for this category are based on the date of birth of the character Sōseki Natsume, who is based on the real life author of the same name. Natsume was born in 1867, and is 33 when he is introduced, which would place The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro in 1900.

In truth, any attempt to base the years on real-life events will result in inconsistencies, as various events referenced in the games take place at different relative times compared to their real-life occurrences. For example, Natsume was only present in the UK from 1901 to January 1903, while in The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro he returns to the UK in February. Plus, he would be 36 in 1903. There are several references to a World’s Fair, but no World’s Fair occurred in Great Britain at this time. Interestingly enough, even Susato is aware of the French “exposition universelle”, a term used for French World’s Fairs/World Expos before 1900, and Hart Vortex’s dialogue seems to imply that a World’s Fair had never occurred in Great Britain before, further complicating things.

A free DLC pack for Dai Gyakuten Saiban notes that the game was set in 1897 in early drafts, but the year is never mentioned in the main game.

The years used for this category are based on two assumptions:

  • The main game is canon to the rest of the series, but the Special Episodes are not.
  • The visit to London occurs after Maggey Byrde is wrongfully convicted of murder, and before her case is appealed a month later in Recipe for Turnabout.

It is evident that the game was not meant to have a firm place at least in the aforementioned "modern" timeline. This can be seen from the lack of dates, the many trilogy references even up to Bridge to the Turnabout, and the crossover with the Professor Layton continuity, which is implied to take place earlier in the 20th century.

It should be noted that there is conflicting information about when Espella Cantabella ran away from home. Espella claims in Chapter 3 that it was five years prior to the events of the game, but her father says in the Epilogue that it was four years.

Complications

The developers of the Ace Attorney games, in particular the people in charge of putting down the ages of characters in the court record, have not paid much attention to any absolute timeline. This is evident in the fact that characters' ages do not change within a game (except during "flashback" cases), even when a new year passes by. This has led to some inconsistencies in character birthdates. The timeline for this page treats the "present" timeline of an individual game as a "year" (much like school terms that straddle the new year), which resolves some of these issues. Since the organizer profiles in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Gyakuten Kenji 2 fit with corresponding court record profiles in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, the 2018-2019 "year" used in Trials and Tribulations is used for the purpose of birth years in these games.

The timeline itself follows. Please note that some of these dates are extrapolations (e.g., "two weeks after Phoenix Wright's disbarment" becomes "May 3") and may not be exactly correct. Nonetheless, it's unlikely that the "true" dates will ever be pinned down.
