When Asukai was a child, he was falsely accused of burning down the shrine in the village temple, and was subsequently ostracized for this perceived crime. Tomorou knew that his friend Tsubaki Tenma was the one responsible for the fire, but covered for him.

Asukai later became an actor and landed the role of "Psychic Teacher" in the action drama Psychic Academy Σ, which was being filmed in his hometown. After Koyuki Kurono was killed by Tenma, Asukai used the Dragon Scale relic to carry her to the Psychic Academy Σ studio and planted the body in her usual chair. When assistant director Larry Butz and the other actors discovered she was dead during a practice run, visiting prosecutor Miles Edgeworth began investigating what had happened. However, Asukai immediately insisted that he was the culprit, and gave Edgeworth until he was taken away by the police to discover how he had moved the body, insisting that he had used his own real powers of teleportation to do so.
