Turnabout Corner
Transcript

Trucy Wright
All sorts of things come out of my panties. Even the truth.

Episode 2: Turnabout Corner is the second case in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Two months after losing his job at Gavin Law Offices as a result of his first trial, Apollo Justice visits Phoenix Wright's old office and is immediately pulled into investigating three separate incidents that happened the previous night. With Phoenix's daughter Trucy helping him out, Justice learns that these seemingly unrelated events are actually connected to a fourth, more serious incident: murder. In taking the case, Justice discovers more about the strange power of his bracelet and is introduced to his ex-mentor's brother, Klavier Gavin, who goes up against him on the prosecutor's bench. This episode also reintroduces Detective Ema Skye, whose once-cheerful demeanor has largely given way to cynicism and disappointment at failing to achieve her dreams.

The case in Turnabout Corner plays out in a straightforward fashion compared to the other cases in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, as it is the only one to conclude with the successful submission of genuine decisive evidence to solve the case. The other cases' resolutions play into the overall message of the game that evidence is not completely reliable for settling cases even when anybody can see what the solution is. Nonetheless, the idea of several seemingly simple and unrelated incidents being connected is a foreshadowing of future events, implied as Phoenix intentionally preparing Apollo Justice for Turnabout Succession.

Intro

The camera slowly zooms away from a wheel that is turning.

As long as we draw breath, the Wheel of Fate turns...

There are brief scenes of Phoenix Wright about to get hit by a car, Trucy Wright chasing someone, and a man playing on his harmonica. Afterward, it is shown that the wheel is part of a stand being pulled by a man late in the evening. Everything except the wheels is silhouetted in darkness.

Spinning big crimes and little crimes together.

The man suddenly stops.

And when the Wheel stops...

The camera pans to another man blocking the stand-puller's way. As the camera begins to zoom away, there is a flash from a gunshot. The camera accelerates, showing part of a park before obscuring the scene behind some towers.

You die.

Series references

  • If Justice inspects the stepladder in the garage, he will refer to it as a ladder. Trucy will then butt in and correct him. This a reference to a running joke in the Ace Attorney series, during which whenever Wright's assistants called a stepladder a ladder, he would correct them, only to then be scolded for his pedantry.
  • While examining the car in the Meraktis Clinic's garage, Justice states that he once read a report about a case that Phoenix Wright worked on many years previously. In said case, there a piece of cloth shoved into the tailpipe of a car that turned out to be a vital clue in solving the case. Justice goes on to say that he is reminded of that case whenever he checks out a car, and hence always checks the tailpipe. This is a reference to Rise from the Ashes from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney in which Lana Skye shoved a scarf wrapped around a knife into the tailpipe of Miles Edgeworth's car.
  • This case contains the only two allusions to Phoenix Wright's old assistant Maya Fey in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, neither of which mention her by name. The first is in the Hickfield Clinic, where Phoenix is recovering from his hit-and-run and Justice notes the many children's action hero show DVDs beside his bed, including the Steel Samurai, The Nickel Samurai and Pink Princess. Phoenix then tells Justice that "This "kid" [he] know[s] keeps sending them to [him]". The second instance is when Justice first meets Guy Eldoon, who proceeds to mention that Phoenix often frequented his father's noodle stand with "his assistant" back during "his attorney days".
  • When talking about Phoenix Wright's last case, it is mentioned that Klavier took the bar exam in Europe and that "they're progressive over there". This could be a reference to two other prosecutors in the series who took the bar exam at very young ages.

Similarities to other cases

  • This case is similar to the case in which Turner Grey was murdered. The victim is a doctor with his own clinic; the murderer was previously a nurse at the doctor's clinic; the murder weapons are a knife and a gun; a car accident is involved; a Japanese-themed family is involved; and both happen in June. Even "Hickfield" makes an appearance here, whereas Director Hotti—a man who either is the same person under a different name, or is just a doppelganger—made his first appearance during the Turner Grey case.
  • Wocky's relationship with Tiala is comparable to Phoenix Wright's relationship with Dahlia Hawthorne to an extent; both Tiala and Hawthorne took advantage of their lovers (who were genuinely in love), and even framed them for a murder.

Typos

  • When Justice hesitates in asking Trucy about her stolen panties, she says, "Your going to have to press me for information" instead of "You're going to have to press me for information".
  • When explaining the absence of fingerprints on the pistol, Stickler says "Criminals these days are loathe to leave fingerprints" instead of "Criminals these days are loath to leave fingerprints".
  • When Justice perceives Tiala's nervous habit, he says, "you used your right thumb to fiddled with your ring" instead of "you used your right thumb to fiddle with your ring".
