A detective's corpse
Things take a shocking turn for Ryūnosuke Naruhodō when a legendary detective is suddenly killed during an investigation of a runaway husband and a scam group of people with red hair. The one arrested for the murder is someone who was never expected to be an actual Death Bringer...
Investigation, Day 1

Ryūnosuke Naruhodō and Susato Mikotoba were in the lobby of London's Bandol Hotel. Susato was still sad about Asōgi's father, she wondered if her own father knew about him, Naruhodō thought so due to them studying abroad together. He also knew that Kazuma Asōgi vanished in Hong Kong, they wondered if he also knew about his alive presence in London. Yūjin Mikotoba and Seishirou Jigoku arrived in the lobby, though Naruhodō had no idea who Jigoku was, until he produced his gavel and said "I find the defendant, Ryūnosuke Naruhodō... guilty!" Jigoku said he's been receiving reports of his adventures and it's his first time in London in a decade due to the national symposium, they're just in time.
Naruhodō remembered that three people took part in the Japan-England exchange program sixteen years ago: Yūjin, Asōgi's father, and Judge Jigoku who was also the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs. Yūjin received a telegram from Hart Vortex about Naruhodō and Susato hearing the Professor Killings from the trial eight days ago. During their fifty day trip by ship on the same route the younger orientals took, they stopped by Paris, France for one night. Yūjin said that sixteen years ago, Jigoku managed to gain the trust of the Lord Chancellor, he himself was just an afterthought but Jigoku said the forensic people loved him. Yet they're sad about losing their friend, his full name was Genshin Asōgi and he was studying at Scotland Yard to be a detective. Jigoku also revealed that Kazuma couldn't have known what happened to him because his official cause of death was "illness". However, Kazuma probably suspected something, he was pretty adamant about wanting to study in Great Britain, he had no other relatives so Yūjin looked after him as his own son. One day, at the professor's lounge of Yuumei University, he said he needed to study in Great Britain no matter what. Perhaps the real reason for that was to investigate his father's death.
Naruhodō told them that Kazuma Asōgi was alive, currently working as Barok van Zieks' "disciple", and originally had amnesia. Neither of them knew this, all they knew was that Asōgi "disappeared" on the ship a year ago. Yūjin revealed they sent an agent to search for him in Hong Kong but there were no leads, he wondered why Vortex didn't tell them.

Yūjin was the top student of forensic pathology at Yuumei University at the time. In order to study British forensic pathology, he went to a large hospital located just beyond a graveyard which is behind a prison. Those corpses used in autopsy research were often unclaimed, so at that time Yūjin received quite a lot of assistance from Mr. Barricade, the chief officer. Six years later, Genshin was arrested for the serial murders. Jigoku stood as a witness in Genshin's secret trial, hoping to help him somehow. According to Yūjin, he overdid it and became a defendant himself. After the trial ended both of them had to return home to Japan, leaving Genshin Asōgi behind. Yūjin thanked Naruhodō for looking after Susato. He was very grateful for when Susato was born, but he was also in great despair at the time, that's why Jigoku forced him to come along to Great Britain. Yūjin told Naruhodō he had "one request" of him, but Susato interrupted them by bringing a bellboy to do a group photo of all four of them.
"Back at Sherlock Holmes'"
In Sherlock Holmes' flat, two red-headed men were screaming and sobbing. Gina Lestrade was just about to lead them both to the police station. One tried to comfort the other other and stop him from looking pathetic but the other one knew he was scared. After thanking Lestrade for coming, Iris Watson wished to meet her father, Naruhodō remembering him as Dr. John H. Watson. Holmes came in with red hair, he offered some tea and they were about to have a guest. Those two gentlemen were petty crooks, when they tried to con Holmes he handed them over to Lestrade when they got home, he couldn't get a hold on Tobias Gregson. Then Holmes' talked about paying the rent, the money Connette Rozaic gave him was spent all in one place. But Holmes found a new way to pay the month's rent two days ago, that's why his hair was red. Regarding the lie about Kazuma Asōgi's false death, Holmes revealed that he was unconscious, amnesia was a side effect. The crew of the S.S. Alaclaire knew about this as well, Holmes made them promise to say he was a victim of murder and to leave his body in Hong Kong. He didn't want to talk about it anymore now, but even he didn't expect Asōgi to vanish at Hong Kong.
On the couch was a copy of last week's newspaper. A want ad for something called the red-headed league was circled in red ink. When presented to Holmes, he revealed that it was supposed to help pay the rent, it was an impressive organization run by a certain group. People had to have red hair to join, they get a salary of four pounds a week. But Holmes said one of the members died recently, he tried apply but they immediately recognized the great detective after he waited eight hours in line, they asked if he was there in disguise under investigation. Before leaving, he revealed that their guest will be an actual client for a case.
"Meeting with Vortex, Part 1"
At Hart Vortex's office, Naruhodō and Susato saw Barok van Zieks giving the Chief Justice the manuscript for an opening address of numerical values tomorrow. Vortex noticed the two, he heard about Yūjin arrival and sent van Zieks to the meeting hall. Naruhodō apologized for exposing Courtney Sithe but Vortex doesn't blame him for what she did. The scientific investigation unit was going to be a department of the yard, but now it would be a while before another consideration due to Dr. Sithe's arrest, the public now hated the unit. However, the London's World's Fair had thirty million visitors, the international scientific investigation symposium would be held at the central hall on those grounds. Vortex said he is destined to be Lord Chancellor and fix the police force. When asked why Asōgi was chosen to be van Zieks' disciple, Vortex explained that three months ago an unknown oriental person appeared. He didn't have a passport, memories, or any clues to identity. He was given a mask because it would be "troublesome" to explain why van Zieks was working with an Asian. Currently, Vortex had no idea where Asōgi was, other than that he left London. His father, Genshin, was one they'd never expected to be a serial killer. The public of London and Japan never found out about the incident, this was done to avoid worsening the their relations. However, Vortex said some actually supported the Professor because most of the nobles he killed were corrupted and society improved after their deaths. Susato found the Professor similar to the Grim Reaper of the Old Bailey.
"Holmes' new client"
Everyday Mittlemont, Anna's missing husband
Returning to Holmes' flat, the doorbell rang. The client wanted them to find her missing husband, Holmes does not really like those cases but didn't want her to know that. Her name was Anna Mittlemont, she noticed Naruhodō and Susato, she originally wanted this to be private. Naruhodō remembered her as the same romantic woman who was Juror No. 2 from Benjamin Dobinbough's trial, Mittlemont remembered him as well. Her husband's full name was Everyday Mittlemont, she showed them a photograph of him. They have been married for fifteen years, he made a decent income and Holmes could tell. Everyday loved Anna dearly, Holmes thought he must've gotten in some sort of incident. Everyday was chief jailer of the Berkly Prison, he was in charge of the execution of the criminals, sometimes he had to lodge for two days. There's was cemetery behind it named Lowgate cemetery, much to Naruhodō's shock. Everyday had been missing since yesterday, it's not unusual for him to leave for a few days but this time he never told Anna about leaving. The police just told her to wait longer since it was just a day. Despite agreeing with the police, Holmes agreed to find Everyday Mittlemont. He claimed it was to make Anna happy, not motived by this month's rent.
Holmes promised to give more information for her the next day and borrowed the photo, Anna was counting on him and left. But Holmes was just hoping for good news, because the rent is due the next day. Naruhodō remembered Lowgate and Berkly from Enoch Drebber, they held the Professor. It was really curious that the chief jailer has vanished, Holmes told them to go to the chief officer, he needed to get rid of his red hair.
"Berkly Prison"

Berkly Prison was outside of London, Lowgate cemetery was back-to-back. Naruhodō and Susato requested a meeting with the chief officer, they were let into his office in the watch tower. There was a big, burly guy inside named Harry Barricade. He refused to tell them anything about prison matters due to them being Japanese and wanted them to leave. Naruhodō and Susato realized this was probably because of Genshin Asōgi. Barricade thought the two were his spies, he threatened to lock them up if they didn't leave. Susato remembered that her father said the name Barricade.
At the Bandol hotel, Yūjin Mikotoba was reading a newspaper. Seishirou Jigoku went to exchange greetings with the department of justice. Naruhodō and Susato told him about what happened with Barricade, Yūjin couldn't come with them since he was busy with preparations for tomorrow. But he wrote a letter of introduction for Barricade to talk to them.
When Barricade saw the letter, he recognized Yūjin and was surprised that Susato was his daughter, even offereing coffee and biscuits. They mentioned that Everyday Mittlemont was missing, but Barricade didn't know about that. He said Mittlemont retired from his job about a decade ago when the Professor was held here! Anna wasn't aware about this, where could he be getting all his money? Mittlemont was actually fired, his duty was to prepare the cells and matters of the executions. But Barricade couldn't say what caused him to lose his job. Susato asked if the Professor's execution was the last one Mittlemont checked over but Barricade refused to say anything. Regarding Yūjin, Barricade said that St. Entre-Deux Hospital was located near the cemetery, he always came to the prison to get pick ups for his forensic studies. Barricade couldn't understand the Japanese despite Yūjin, that was all he could say. He gave them a copy of Mittlemont's decade old dismissal notice as a souvenir. He didn't want them to come back, they decided to return to Baker Street.
"A Very Shocking Victim and Culprit"
Iris Watson greeted the two with scones, Sherlock Holmes' hair was now blue, splashing chemicals was not a good idea. Before the two could reveal anything, Gina Lestrade came with the most dreadful news: Tobias Gregson was shot and killed! Everyone was utterly shocked, the crime scene was a small room for rent just off Fresno Street. Even more shocking was that that the one that was arrested was the Death Bringer, Barok van Zieks! They heard a gunshot, and when the witness arrived only Gregson and van Zieks were in the room. Holmes couldn't believe Gregson was dead either, he went ahead to investigate and he left van Zieks to Naruhodō and Susato, Iris called them a carriage.
"Fresno Street Apartment"
The crime scene was a cheap, dusty room in a lodging house outside of London, the back alley had little foot trapping. The police investigation has begun but Holmes wasn't there, Gina Lestrade was angry that they weren't investigating hard enough. She said Holmes had appeared, messed up the crime scene, and left like the wind. Lestrade didn't think Naruhodō should defend van Zieks, but Susato assured her that the judicial system would just him, so Lestrade allowed them to investigate.
What's she doing here?
The fireplace has a lot of dust, perhaps nobody lived there. On the desk was a picture of a younger Anna Mittlemont, the woman from earlier. What a photo of her doing here was the most baffling part of the crime scene. There was a large partitioning board with papers all over it, one of them said "Everyday Mittlemont", others were autopsy reports and inmates in prison, only a detective could get their hands on this stuff. There were newspapers as well, one of them has an ad for the red-headed league. The officers were so sad that Gregson died, they couldn't properly investigate. A real pistol was on the floor, it was probably the murder weapon. There was also a bright red wig and a little figurine of a police officer with a key-like rod comes out of its foot when its head was twisted. Apparently, Gregson died curled up due to the outline and blood. One of the candles on the holder nearby was black like it was blown off with gunpowder, the windows were also boarded up after windows broke.
Gina Lestrade said that Detective Gregson was legendary for solving incredible cases like nothing all by himself. Gregson respected Barok van Zieks because everyone fears him as the Death Bringer. The Death Bringer only goes after bad guys so Lestrade could relax. This room was rented by someone named Hugh Boone but no one knew who he was. Susato thought Boone may be Gregson because of his private investigations, this might be his secret base, the Yard was actually assuming that too. Gregson was only shoot once with the pistol, the bullet went through the candle. Everyone said the pistol belonged to van Zieks, some vendors outdoor heard the gunshot, they were taken to the Yard for questioning.
"Interviewing a Death God, Part 1"
Barok van Zieks was reading something in the Gaol, he didn't want to see Naruhodō. Susato said they owe a lot to Gregson and wanted the prosecutor to cooperate. Van Zieks was reading a letter from Benjamin Dobinbough. After hearing what the two already know he refused to give any information, he didn't really know what happened because the police arrested him before he could investigate. He wouldn't tell what he was doing in the room in the first place because they aren't his lawyer. He hadn't decided on a lawyer, none wanted to be involved with the Death Bringer trial because in van Zieks' career, nineteen defendants received not guilty verdicts and sixteen of them died. Dobinbough safely arrived at Germany, he should be out of reach of the Death Bringe like Sōseki Natsume. Naruhodō knew van Zieks wouldn't kill anyone, van Zieks thanked him but he didn't believe in anyone, especially the Japanese.
"The Prosecutor"
Back in Hart Vortex's office, the Chief justice was talking to Kazuma Asōgi who just arrived on the train. Vortex knew that the two heard about van Zieks killing Gregson, he just believed in the facts which point towards the prosecutor. The scientific investigation symposium starts tomorrow, Vortex wants a swift and fair trial that day. He also introduces them to Asōgi but they already know who he is, he is the prosecutor! Everyone in Great Britain wants to know the outcome of this trial and the secret about the Death Bringer curse. Asōgi is a skilled lawyer on both defense and prosecution sides, he'll just use his defending skills on the opposite bench. He request the prosecution himself, Naruhodō will understand why tomorrow. But van Zieks has rejected all defense attorney, but since he is the pride of the whole empire the public shouldn't witness his judgement. The pistol that killed Gregson is issued to those involved with the police, including the prosecutors. Van Zieks lost his pistol, he is suspicious but there is no proof.
Barok, Klimt, and Gregson
Kazuma Asōgi has regained all his memories, including his mission in London. He's been hearing a voice all year to go to the empire. He was guided by the voice and ended up here. But Asōgi has lost other things, he can't be on close terms with Naruhodō anymore due to being a prosecutor. Vortex is sure tomorrow's trial will go down in history. Before the leave, Asōgi says he is grateful to Naruhodō for taking his mission to heart and fulfilled his role splendidly. Asōgi wants Naruhodō to be the defense, he gives him an old photo of Barok, Klimt, and Gregson all happy, it was in Gregson's office. They have to hurry before the visiting hours end.
"Interviewing a Death God, Part 2"
Barok van Zieks was now reading case files, he was insulted by Naruhodō's comment. He was surprised that Asōgi is the prosecutor, he allowed the two to speak to him. Barok's brother, Klimt, was killed ten years ago by Asōgi's father, Genshin. Now he thinks he son will pull off a Kangaroo court. Susato wonders about Vortex's intentions where Asōgi just got his memories back. Van Zieks became a prosecutor around Klimt's death, he was the Chief prosecutor at the time on the trail of the Professor. Genshin was working with him, he was hiding behind nobility. Van Zieks was robbed of his brother, his old friend, and his belief in justice. He begged to be the prosecutor in charge to avenge to his brother. The original prosecutor was Hart Vortex who was outstanding, he was the only one van Zieks could call a benefactor. But then Naruhodō and Susato came along and pull of their defending skills. Naruhodō knew about his hatred towards Japanese since their first trial, he can't blame that emotion for the reason. Kazuma Asōgi probably wants revenge on van Zieks for what he did to his father. He also doesn't understand why English Tobias Gregson would be transferred to the police of France at all. He's legendary because he figured out the Professor's identity by discovering evidence after he insisted an autopsy report on Klimt. Back then, autopsies were rarely performed due to being considered discretion to the dead, and Klimt was an aristocrat. But Gregson swayed the house of lords and van Zieks avenged his brother, but the prosecutor doesn't trust anyone. The pistol was not his, van Zieks doesn't know when he lost it. He got it when he was a prosecutor but when he put it away somewhere it vanished. When showed the photograph, van Zieks reveals that it was taken he received his letter of appointment as a prosecutor, the person on the left is indeed Klimt van Zieks. He is surprised that Gregson may have actually respected him. Now van Zieks remembers that the photo was when they were happier together back then. He says Naruhodō's name for the first time and actually accepts him as a defense attorney seeing him as someone he can actually trust.
Trial
"Before the Trial"

Ryūnosuke Naruhodō is feeling more overwhelmed then usual, probably from Barok van Zieks. Today's trial will be different from normal, there won't be a Jury, just like the Professor's trial. Sherlock Holmes arrived with his hair back to normal, but it was really hard for him to do that. He has a conversation with van Zieks, he says the prosecutor has a taste in defense attorneys and he'd better be prepared. Gina Lestrade and Yūjin Mikotoba suddenly arrive, the symposium has postponed so they came to watch the trial. Lestrade holds a grudge against van Zieks but Naruhodō doesn't think that's what happened, she wants to know who really killed Gregson. It's time for the trial to start, so many people lost their loved ones, Naruhodō must bring light to this darkness.
"Opening"

The judge announces the opening of the trial, Naruhodō and Kazuma Asōgi are ready, they are both Japanese in the English court. Death Bringer Barok van Zieks is the defendant, so maybe he'll curse will finally be revealed. The trial is top secret by orders of the queen, all the people in the gallery are members of the nation's judicial system. Asōgi gives the opening statement, he says he's here in London to prosecute this trial. On the first of November after 5 PM, on the back alley of Fresno street outside of London, Tobias Gregson was found in the room of an old apartment building. The witnesses who heard the gunshot all agree that it was the defendant. Asōgi shows the court a diagram of the crime scene, the bullet seemed to kill him instantly, it was a point blank range of a few inches. He not making assumptions with evidence. The crime scene was desolate, maybe Gregson was investigating a case. The witnesses saw the defendant holding the gun and he was arrested. Asōgi is calling van Zieks to the stand as the first witness.
"Cross-examining the Defendant"
Barok van Zieks takes the stand, he agrees that what was said is true. He will now testify why he was there and what he was doing. The judge expected him to be the defendant ever since he became the Grim Reaper. Van Zieks says he discovered the room when he was investigating Gregson. It was dark and he couldn't see, he turned around when he heard a gunshot and noticed the pistol. When he picked it up the door burst open and he heard a man scream, they he found Gregson's corpse before him. Asōgi doesn't believe that testimony despite being his former apprentice, he seems off today.
Van Zieks can't say why he was investigating Gregson, but he says he might have participated in a certain incident. He looked into his plans ahead of time at his yard at the office, the time he was killed and the location are marked. Infiltrating the office is a crime itself, Asōgi isn't buying it. This is the first time he was ever there, the windows were boarded up preventing light barring a lamp of the desk, he couldn't search it because of the gunshot. Naruhodō suggests that the gunshot was outside but van Zieks smelled the gunpowder inside. The gun was stone cold when he picked it up and it didn't smell. The man who screamed was one of the Fresno street vendors who selling their wares when they heard the gunshot, they were a match seller, an intelligence vendor, and an advertiser. They nearly broke down the door when they arrived, the man went to get the patrolman on Fresno street. Gregson just suddenly appeared in front of van Zieks, all he heard was the sound of the door bursting and that man's scream. He examined the body and it was definitely Gregson, but he doesn't know how he was killed. Asōgi says that the testimony is a big contradiction, one of the candles is longer meaning the other two were lit. Plus, the board at the crime scene had case records with the oldest one being ten years old, they were all cases lost by van Zieks where the defendants died. It must have been the Death Bringers hideout, Gregson must have been investigating the hideout, that's a motive. Van Zieks says that they are the fact, Asōgi submits the board as evidence. Now, he will call new witnesses who saw the murder occur.
"Cross-examining the Fresno Street vendors"
Three people in strange clothes take the stand, one of them looks familiar. They are only called by nicknames, the one with the weird lip is "Gossip" who sells amusing topics to people along the street. Naruhodō was forced by Susato and the judge to buy a story regarding the birth of twins. The girl with the red hood was nicknamed "Venus", she sells fireworks recently to the school students. Naruhodō is forced to buy the Venus special fireworks as well. The last vendor is called "Sandwich", he doesn't really sell anything, he gives people information and directions instead. These three work together all day right outside the apartment building, they all saw the murder.
Tobias Gregson's corpse
They say they saw the two enter the apartment building then heard a bang a minute later. "Sandwich" says loose-limbed people are light on their feet, "Gossip" arrived and found van Zieks holding the pistol and Gregson's corpse lying next to him, "Venus" ran to get an officer. "Gossip" knew van Zieks from the newspaper sketches, the apartment building is in bad shape and expensive so most of the rooms were vacant. The crime scene was the only room with a tenant: "Hugh Boone". During the cross-examination, "Gossip" says van Zieks entered after Gregson, the detective came fifteen minutes before the gunshot. The peddlers comment of his red hair, Asōgi submits a photo of Gregson's corpse as evidence, it shows him wearing a red wig. The trunk he was carrying wasn't found at the crime scene. The candles lit the whole room, "Gossip" suddenly noticed van Zieks. When he says he glared at the Grim Reaper, "Sandwich" turns his sign around very slowly. He says "Gossip" really fell on his hands and knees fear, "Gossip" reluctantly adds that he put his hand in a puddle of blood then smeared on the floor all by accident. Naruhodō and Susato find a bloody handprint on the bulletin board, Asōgi says there were know handprints on the floor. When Naruhodō presents the bulletin board, "Gossip" recognizes it as his right hand. Naruhodō suggests that the board was tipped over, but Asōgi says that it was by the door instead of near the body. Naruhodō admits that there is a contradiction in his claims, he says the hand is upside down meaning the board was moved after the murder when the police arrived.
Asōgi demands to know who moved it, despite not knowing Naruhodō says the testimonies say the board was right next to the door on the other side. That explains how Gregson and the candles suddenly appeared, the door knocked the board down, van Zieks must be telling the truth. The judge asks for testimonies of what the witnesses did at the crime scene.
"The Moving Bulletin Board"
They don't know anything about the board. "Gossip" says it must have been van Zieks', "Sandwich" adds that the fact that the gunshot killed Gregson doesn't change anything. Asōgi thinks they aren't so sure what happened at the crime scene, he also says only the defendant could've moved the board. When "Venus" says she is good at lying, "Sandwich" strokes his mustache. He says a lying paradox regarding "Venus", he reveals she ran up the stairs after "Gossip".
The judge will decide a punishment for her later, "Venus" said she just poked her head into the crime scene but then says she turned the place over a little and she moved the board! She found an old watch, that's when Gina Lestrade suddenly takes the stand. She says it was a memorial present for Gregson from solving the Professor's killings, he had a habit of winding it every day. Lestrade tried to pickpocket it but Gregson says only his life is more valuable that the watch. The glass inside is broken and the hands have stopped at five o'clock, when the gunshot rang out the crime scene. The moving board mystery was solved but there wasn't really any significance.
Upon closely inspecting the watch, Naruhodō and Susato find a unique key hole at the bottom. The key in the policeman figurine matches it, but the watch starts working again after being wound, meaning it wasn't broken. Naruhodō presents it to "Sandwich" and Asōgi, that doesn't mean the gunshot broke it at the time of the murder, Gregson must've wound it the day before the murder and wouldn't have needed to do it again. The victim perished when the watch needed to be wound again! But Asōgi says the coroner wouldn't have missed that, Susato reveals that the autopsy report doesn't actually say the estimated time of death. Yet, the victim's blood wasn't dry yet, Susato suggests that it wasn't blood of a human. Naruhodō suggests that the witnesses might not have heard an actual gunshot. Remembering the fireworks he bought from "Venus", he says that they sound exactly like a gunshot and that a timer was used. One of the candles had gunpowder on them, so Naruhodō concludes that the fireworks were tied to it from the real culprit, when the flames melted through the wax they eventually lit the fuse. The say witnesses saw Gregson's red hair but Naruhodō says it was just a wig.
Kazuma Asōgi finds this amusing despite being impressed with the defense, he doesn't trust the English justice system. He says the pocket watch theory needs more investigating, what was Gregson doing the day before he was murdered? But the detective always works alone and his case are confidential. Susato and Naruhodō believes he was trying to track down the Red-Headed League, the wig is for undercover work. It's currently being investigated as a fraud operation, stealing the cash of all the London people with red hair, the two criminals were arrested yesterday. Naruhodō wants them to testify as the should've encountered Gregson and there may be many more unknown incidents. Asōgi will bring the masterminds of the league and there will be a half hour intermission.

Gina Lestrade and Sherlock Holmes are in the defendant lobby. They were quite surprised that Tobias Gregson died earlier than expected. They wonder why the time was left out on the autopsy report. Holmes denies being gullible about the league, the two masterminds were the two redheads that were in Holmes' room.
"Cross-examining the Red-Headed League"

The two Red-Headed League leaders take the stand. The one with glasses is Maurice de Quilco, he says he's a descendant of a powerful aristocratic family called the Quilcos from Nice, France. The short, plump one is Marco di Gicho, he claims he's the third son of the Gichos family from Naples, Italy. They admit the have great ideas but use bad ways, fraud being one of them, di Gicho calls it a charming paradox. Apparently they were made fun of in school due to their red hair, that's why they made the league, the interview fee was five shillings. They will now testify about what they know about Tobias Gregson.
The Red-Headed League
In the Lime Street park the other day, there were a thousand redheads, but the two don't remember seeing Gregson. So they have no connection to the victim but wouldn't have been caught if it wasn't for di Gicho. The judge starts to already doubt their testimony. Asōgi says that Gregson definitely had his notebook plans for the day before the incident, it says it was an undercover investigation for the league, maybe something happened during it. The two interviewed all the people that came, they were told their name and address and received the payments, it took a whole day. But unless they had more specific information they couldn't remember Gregson like his mustache being a different color. Upon finding out he was a detective, de Quilco still won't change his answer but di Gicho goes deep in thought. Despite de Quilco's persistant of silence, di Gicho says that someone there was a detective! De Quilco tries to lie and have di Gicho shut up but he keeps telling the truth. De Quilco is forced to admit it, but the detective's face didn't look anything like Gregson's, he had a younger face with sad eyes and a splendid jaw. He demanded proof of being a detective and he showed them his ID, the judge finds that strange as there is no way a detective undercover would show that, so it must've been fake. But that man kept saying he was a detective so he was thrown out, de Quilco has the fake ID now and presents it to the court.
When Naruhodō and Susato look at it, it seems like a very legit ID. In fact, it even has the symbol of the Scotland Yard, apparently it belongs to Tobias Gregson! Gina Lestrade confirms this to indeed be the real deal from her late boss, he must've really been there undercover. Maybe there were some circumstances that kept him from reporting that it was stolen, like being murdered by that time, there's a chance he was murdered somewhere else. The two start crying, Lestrade demands them to knock it off. They need to tell the truth or there will be punishments.
"The Detective and his ID"
They actually locked that "fake" detective in their hideout for the night. It was in the room next to theirs, they confiscated the ID. He was released he next morning, the two just had to hang out in that room for the night. But this wasn't part of their plan, they really thought he was a fake. Gregson tried to sneak out during the middle of the night through the vent, so they had to chase him down and catch him. But when de Quilco said it was peacefully, di Gicho acts pretty strange. He tried to escape through the inn window the day before the league, de Quilco caught him and threw him back in their room, this gave him a large mark on his neck. Naruhodō requests more testimony about that detail, Gregson does not have that mark on his neck! The two remind the court that they said the man was a completely different person, but then the genuine ID wouldn't make any sense. The facts don't lie even if they are hard to believe, that Gregson must have been an imposter. "Gossip" had a mark on his neck, he must've been the imposter! Naruhodō wants him back on the stand and the judge has the bailiff bring him.
"Cross-examining "Hugh Boone", with de Quilco and di Gicho"
He shows him the same mark on Marco di Gicho's neck, they're exactly the same. But "Gossip" says he was born with that mark and he has no idea about any of this. Yet the defense and prosecution want one final testimony from him and the red-headed league. The two say the fake detective looked nothing like "Gossip", he never even left Fresno street. He's all alone with no family and can't hide his face with a disguise. Maurice de Quilco didn't think the testimony was necessary, "Gossip" wants the cross-examination to be brief.
"Gossip" knew about the league, he gave information about it to "Sandwich", he had a red nose. But when he says he wouldn't go to other streets, de Quilco goes deep into thought. He says he thought about renting a house on Lime street for their hideout, that's where he saw him in a real estate office paying the agent with a contract. "Gossip" denies this but then Marco di Gicho remembers that he had a thick roll of cash and saw his name of the contract, it's Hugh Boone! The judge doesn't think they should reveal personal lives, but Naruhodō remembers that the name is of the tenant who rented out the crime scene. Boone agrees about all that, being a peddler he could afford the ramshackle room. He remembers the two red-heads there the day he was paying the rent, but he just wanted to make a quiet living.
Then Naruhodō presents the picture of Anna Mittlemont that was found in the room. Yet Asōgi assures him that he couldn't possibly pose as Detective Gregson due to his unique appearence, but Naruhodō says those lips might be the disguise. Naruhodō says that this peddler is actually Everyday Mittlemont, Anna's missing husband. He couldn't return home because of this case. Per Naruhodō's request, Maurice de Quilco and Marco di Gicho shake "Hugh Boone" until his hat, wig, and lip come off revealing him to indeed be Everyday Mittlemont.

With his disguise removed, the two redheads remember him as the detective they saw that day. Mittlemont was once nominated for the chief officer of Berkly Prison, but he stopped being the chief jailer a decade ago. He admits his identity and apologizes for everything, "Hugh Boone" was a name he created for his peddler ego. After he retired from the prison, London was at a major recession at the time and he couldn't find another job. Mittlemont didn't tell his wife about this, he made an account at the London bank using his "Boone" name and rented the Fresno flat. He reports to that room for work at about 8:30 AM everyday, at 5 PM he goes back the room, goes back to being Everyday Mittlemont and goes home.
Gregson finding Mittlemont
He couldn't betray his family, but regarding the salary and coverup, he says it was due to Tobias Gregson! A few years after becoming "Hugh Boone", he somehow managed to find him. Back when he was the head jailer, Gregson visited him. When he noticed him on Fresno Street he was concerned and starting visiting routinely since. He entrusted Mittlemont with secret missions, he would pose as him and perform interviews and stakeouts. He would always meet him in the same apartment and give him his ID. Gregson always told him never to tell anyone about this, even if he died. He had police records and used the flat as like a second office. The red-headed league was another assignment.
Kazuma Asōgi says that Gregson was killed during his investigation of the league, but Mittlemont protests that the league doesn't seem to have anything to do with the murder. Asōgi doesn't want the cross-examination to end though, he asks Mittlemont if he witnessed the execution of the Professor, his father. He says there is a connection towards that case, he's acting less calm than normal, but he says it's necessary. Mittlemont doesn't really remember what happened before his resignation, Susato finds that odd. Naruhodō decides to present the disciplinary dismissal notice regarding his firing. Mittlemont is very surprised at this, Asōgi also informs about what happened on June 17th where the Professor rose from the grave after his execution. Mittlemont should've watched his death and oversee all the preparations. He starts to remember, Berkly was in an uproar afterwards! The newspaper article about Enoch Drebber were signs that the event occurred, there was a lot of bloodstains in the Professor's grave. An investigation concluded that someone in the jail assisted him in his escape. Mittlemont was suspected, a few nights after some detectives visited the prison, he was summoned to Harry Barricade at the observation tower. The detectives wanted to ask him some questions and Barricade told him to pack up his office. Suddenly, the screen literally smashes back to the present and Everyday Mittlemont screams then faints. The judge has the bailiff summon the emergency units and suspends the trial for the day.
Investigation, Day 2
Back at Holmes' Flat

Ryūnosuke Naruhodō couldn't believe the trial, Susato Mikotoba reveals that the bailiffs told her that Mittlemont went to the hospital. It turns out Mittlemont tried to kill himself by jumping out the window of the tower, he lost his memories ever since. Iris Watson offers them some herbal tea and her help, she almost finished her next manuscript. Naruhodō doesn't think that Barok van Zieks is the killer, they wonder about Kazuma Asōgi. Tobias Gregson must have been killed the day before, but why was van Zieks investigating him? The cases on the board were all related to the Death Bringer, they need to look into Gregson's movements. Before he was killed, he was investigating the red-headed league, but Everyday Mittlemont showed up with his ID instead. Iris suggests this might be to create an alibi, then remembers Anna Mittlemont. Her husband was in charge of supervising the cell of the Professor but he was blamed for his escape. And now he's doing his secret job as acting as Gregson for him while being a peddler. Iris decides that it's time they head out, she takes a gun filled with boiling tea.
"Meeting with Vortex, Part 2"
In the high court of justice, Hart Vortex told Kazuma Asōgi to move the trial along. Asōgi leaves and Vortex announces that the verdict of Barok van Zieks has been delayed due to Asōgi's questioning. He didn't know if Asōgi thinks that van Zieks is the Grim Reaper. He reveals that the defendant of his second trial, the leader of a crime syndicate, threatened the jury to get acquitted. Three days later, he was crushed by concrete at a construction site, that was the first appearance of the Death Bringer. Although it was declared an accident, about sixteen more people met unnatural deaths afterward, this can't be a coincidence. The truth might finally be revealed, but they don't how the public will react to it, that's why the trial is top secret. This is the first secret trial since the Professor case, Vortex was the original prosecutor but van Zieks begged to take his place so he can avenge his brother. But he seems to deny being a part of Vortex's "clock", he plans to do something tomorrow. He has a meeting he is really late for so he has to go now, but he allows them to interview Asōgi.
"Interviewing a Death God, Part 3"
In cell one of the Gaol, Barok van Zieks is reading a book when he notices the three. He guesses he should be agreeable to his defense attorney despite him being Japanese. He is impressed with Kazuma Asōgi as a prosecutor but figures this might be a punishment for playing the part of the Grim Reaper. Because of all the criminals attacking him, it seems someone is taking advantage of van Zieks' silence. He says the Grim Reaper is actually an organization he's been trying to hunt down, it would be impossible to commit all these crimes alone. The Reaper knows about the defendants and their cases, meaning someone from Scotland Yard is involved, he says he is Tobias Gregson! That's why he was investigating him, but Gregson only had the most prominent position, he only investigated each target and formulated the plan to kill them, he alwasy had an alibi. He used Everday Mittlemont who was unaware of this, the Fresno apartment is the base where Gregson meets with the actual killer and make the plans. It's a actually a Grim Reapress, her name is Ann Sasha! Naruhodō remembers her as the real name of Jezail Brett who killed John H. Watson, she almost got away due to consuler jurisdction but was killed. Susato and Naruhodō agree that they shouldn't talk about Sasha around Iris due to her killing her father, Susato should tell Yūjin about this.
Barok and Genshin being attacked by thugs.
Van Zieks then hears about how Naruhodō replaced Asōgi as the exchange student, he reminds him of his father. Back then, some aristocrats exercise their power to to make playthings of the government economy, military and even the citizens. Barok guesses the Professor was a hero somewhat, but he doesn't understand why he would kill his brother, Klimt, at all. He reveals that Genshin Asōgi even saved his life once! It was a late foggy night after Klimt's death, Barok and Genshin were walking along a back alley, he was unaware of his identity of the Professor. Suddenly, they were surrounded by thugs with pistols who were hiding their faces with scarves. Klimt van Zieks was an outstanding prosecutor at the time, London's villains considered him an eyesore, so they occasionally targeted Barok. Just when he thought he was going to be killed, Genshin whispered that he'd never be able to face Klimt again. Barok doesn't really know what happened after that, but everything went quiet. Genshin was lying on the brick road with his left hand bleeding, he protected Barok. He was arrested for being the Professor two days later, Barok lost his brother and his foreign friend. Naruhodō thanks van Zieks for telling him his story, Susato sees that the Professor, Death Bringer and Gregson all have a connection, Naruhodō can't believe he was the Grim Reaper working with Jezail Brett. Susato says they should go to the Bandol Hotel to see her father.
"Yūjin at the Bandol Hotel"
Yūjin Mikotoba notices the three, Iris Watson introduces herself, he is a big fan of her work. He was able to see the trial since he was a guest to the symposium and he was impressed with Naruhodō with even facing Asōgi. They decide to have some tea, Seishirou Jigoku isn't here. Yūjin heard about the rumors of the Death God of the Old Bailey from a member of the justice system yesterday. It didn't exist ten years ago due to him returning to Japan, the two say the entity is really Ann Sasha/Jezail Brett. Yūjin is surprised and Susato sends Iris to get some cookies with her so she doesn't hear about her father's death. Yūjin reveals that John Watson was not the partner of Sherlock Holmes and doesn't think he had a daughter! But they should still be quiet, the girls arrives with cinnamon biscuits.
Yūjin hasn't seen Jigoku since this morning, but now the symposium is delayed, maybe he went to see the World's Fair. Ten years ago, Jigoku tried to have Genshin Asōgi's punishment lightened but ended up smashing the witness stand! Additionally, since his words brought humiliation to England he became a defendant as well, but he received a not guilty verdict and safely returned to Japan with Yūjin. He also finished developing the photo that was taken yesterday. His request was for Naruhodō to go back to Japan! Their legal system is still under development, what they need is a real defense attorney now. The Japanese government is deciding what do do with Kazuma Asōgi, but Naruhodō just has to think about the request before this trial ends.
Yūjin has to go report Ann Sasha to the Japanese government and police, he looks forward to Iris' next issue. He asks Naruhodō to think about his request and wishes him good luck. Suddenly, Sherlock Holmes appears, pondering something about Sasha. He was drinking tea under the chairs. He hears about Yūjin's actions just now and he actually prays that his deductions are actually incorrect. He gives Naruhodō the bill for his tea and quickly leaves. Susato leaves for her father and Iris goes to call a carriage, leaving Naruhodō with the bill.
"Mittlemont in the Hospital"
In a ward in St. Entre-Deux Hospital, Everyday Mittlemont managed to compose himself. Kazuma Asōgi left a momemt ago, also apologizing for revealing his secret. Mittlemont always felt guily about deceiving Anna, but also himself for being dismissed. He met Gregson around the time and he gave him a large amount of compensation for bing his proxy. But he swears he wasn't the one who helped the Professor break out, he wants someone to hear him out.
Gregson was ordered to carry out special duties to investigate something with the yard knowing, probably for the Death Bringer. That's why Mittlemont pretended to be Gregson in order to leave an impression. The day before the incident, he was told to go to Lime street for the Red-Headed League and make a scene. But them those two locked him up after he waved around the idea like he usually does, he was released the next morning. He return to Fresno street around 5 to give his report but then heard the gunshot.
The time of the Professor's execution was midnight of June seventeenth, but it was used to enact the jailbreak plan. Berkly Prison has high security so there are some rules regarding leaving and entering, but there was a blind spot, the Professor's casket. The coroner rules each prisoner dead and they receive a burial at Lowgate Cemetary, then their casket is set aside and the head jailer signs a confirmation form. Only the executioner and the coroner are allowed to witness the death, Mittlemont waited in the room next door for the confirmation report. When he went there he saw that the casket was already nailed shut before the form was signed. Mittlemont assumed the vice head jailer checked and shut it for him, but Genshin Asōgi was alive. They all wondered what happened that night. All Mittlemont knows is that someone inside the prison must've helped him escape and that it wasn't him. He remembers Genshin well despite only meaning him for a little bit, his trial was speedy due to the treaty. Mittlemont supervised him in his solitary cell for a week, but Genshin always seemed calm and polite with knowledge. When asked if he really killed the five nobles, Genshin says yes. The trial was the next day and he received his guilty verdict, when he returned to his cell that night Mittlemont saw something odd on his patrol, it was Genshin's will he was holding. He was only allowed to bring personal items in his cell due to being Japanese, but he wasn't allowed pen or paper but he still had one. Genshin begged Mittlemont to ignore his will which he calls his final "weapon". But then the will vanished after Genshin's execution, the jailers didn't find it to give to Kazuma. Chief officer Barricade said it should've been there despite Mittlemont supposedly only knowing about the Asōgi file.
That's all Everday Mittlemont can tell them, Anna will be here soon. But posing as a detective is a crime, so he'll probably be arrested but he knew it would catch up one day. Suddenly, he wants to say one more thing about the Asōgi file. He wants them to keep a secret about it because it's a high level secret and something bad might happen if it's revealed.
"Another Meeting with Barricade"
Harry Barricade has heard that they found Everyday Mittlemont, but he emphasizes that the prison has nothing to do with the case. Iris gets a hard, handcuff shaped biscuit when saying he got disciplinarily dismissed. Naruhodō asks Barricade about the Asōgi files, but the chief officer sternly tells them to stick to the present cases. The Professor's execution and escape was a dark spot for Berkly Prison, the coroner in charge was Courtney Sithe and Mittlemont was in charge of the execution. Barricade says his suicide was an excuse for having his crime found out. There was no one else around who knows the details of what happened at the time. Sithe isn't allowed visitors, probably to prevent leaking information. He suggests Maria Goulloyne might know about the situation, she is Sithe's only daughter. Their family seem to have unusual circumstances, apparently Goulloyne would choose the same path after watching her mother labor over those murder victims. She's also the one in charge of Gregson's incomplete autopsy, she might know about ten years ago. Barricade wishes they would stop talking about the Professor killings and doesn't want them to come back.
Susato says their information sources regarding the Asōgi file is a trade secret. Barricade confirms that Asōgi indeed wrote his will, it didn't vanish, he actually has it write now and gives it to him. In brush strokes, Genshin says he wants all belongings to go to his son. After the belongings were shipped to Japan the case was over. Barricade demands that they keep quiet about it as possible.

"Questioning Prosecutor Asōgi"
In the Prosecutor's office, Kazuma Asōgi figured they would be stopping by. He knew Naruhodō would stick to being a defense attorney and Susato is so happy that his dream of being in court came true. Asōgi didn't know this would happen when they were together in court. Naruhodō is here to hear what he has to say about the Professor killings, but first he wants to hear what happened on the S.S. Alaclaire. When Asōgi woke up, he lying in a narrow cabin on a bed decorated with a wreath of flowers. Already amnesiac, he snuck out quietly and headed for the deck, but his head kept saying he had a secret mission in England. When the steamship ported at Hong Kong, he disembarked in the middle of other passengers. He concealed himself and was able to secure a job on the cargo ship. After stopping at countless ports, he finally arrived at Dover Harbor three months ago. But he couldn't remember his mission, he was apprehended by the immigration office as an illegal alien and escorted to Scotland Yard. That's where he met Hart Vortex during a meeting, he brought Asōgi to the prosecutor's office and let him stay in his own due to his knowledge of the law.
Kazuma Asōgi and his father
Regarding Genshin, Kazuma was very young when he left for England, his last memory was photo taken right before he left. Six years later, Yūjin Mikotoba told him that Genshin died of an illness. After that, he took Kazuma in and helped pay for his education at Yuumei University. But he still wasn't convinced that an illness killed his father, they received a letter one day from England revealing Genshin as a serial killer! It is unknown who wrote the letter, but they were probably silenced. There was also a newspaper article about the Professor, Mikotoba didn't see the letter but Seishirou Jigoku did, after so feared hesitation he laughed it off. A year later, Asōgi's mother died due to an illness. But anyway, he was impressed with Naruhodō's defense today. They imform about Tobias Gregson being the Death Bringer, but Asōgi says he already knows saying Barok van Zieks is ordering him. He made sure that Genshin was sent to the gallows, but Kazuma knows his father wasn't a serial killer, just that he was killed by the Grim Reaper.
Naruhodō brings up how Gregson's time of death isn't listed in the autopsy report, Asōgi made a trip to the forensic pathology lab a while ago. But the coroner in charge, Dr. Goulloyne, was out. The lab is located between Lowgate Cemetary, where Genshin was buried. Asōgi thanks Naruhodō for protecting and returning his sword, "Karuma", made by a famous blacksmith during the Sengoku period. It's a symbol of the martial-arts family, one of Genshin's apprentices took his name as his surname. He took it with him in his study abroad. Tomorrow, Asōgi is determined to prove that van Zieks is the Grim Reaper who killed Gregson but Naruhodō won't allow it and they part ways.
"Meeting Maria Goulloyne"
In the forensics pathology lab, there a sweet, rose scent inside now. The three hear someone sharping lancets. Maria Goulloyne says they'll die if she doesn't, she offers to cut them to test them out! They look around at all the creepy stuff in the lab, with Goulloyne responding with something that slightly scares them. When asked about Tobias Gregson's time of death, Goulloyne just notes that they aren't dead. So Naruhodō presents her the autopsy report, she takes off her mask and says that's not her fault. Hart Vortex told Goulloyne not to write it because it was obvious that Gregson's death was as theorized. Naruhodō says she'll soon end up like her mother but then Goulloyne writes that Gregson's death was impossible to estimate. She found fish and chips in his coat pocket that started to mold, meaning someone probably tampered with the body to throw off the time of his death. She suggests that his body was frozen without his coat on, Iris says a big ice box might come from a factory. Goulloyne says that it might have been a day before matching Naruhodō's theory, but Vortex says there were none of the sort near Fresno street. Maria Goulloyne goes back to sharpening her lancet.
A while later she is still sharpening. Now the group asks her about Courtney Sithe, her mother who announced the Professor dead after his execution. Goulloyne says she also observed the autopsy of his last victim, Klimt van Zieks. Gregson insisted on the miracle happening, the autopsy occurred in this very lab. Sithe's biggest job was watching the Professor's execution and signed it off, she can't believe it was all a lie when she found out. Goulloyne sees this forced doing as what Vortex is doing to herself now. They wonder who gave instructions for the jailbreak plan. Sithe was just an assistant to Klimt's autopsy, the real man in charge was John H. Watson, the other assistant was Yūjin Mikotoba. Decisive evidence found in Klimt pointed Genshin Asōgi as the true killer, Goulloyne allows the group to look at the files but there doesn't seem to be any record about Klimt. Goulloyne is surprised at this, two years ago Sherlock Holmes came wanting to see the records. Iris remembers some business and tells Naruhodō she is suddenly going home by herself but Goulloyne stops her as she's been here before. Iris was with Holmes two years ago but she leaves now. Goulloyne admits that talking to them was fun. The initials T.G. are on it, Gina Lestrade suddenly arrives claiming that is her trunk.
"Back to the Crime Scene"
Back at the Fresno Street apartment, the investigation is progressing. Naruhodō feels as if something is off here, Susato says they should investigate. They notice a heavy, metal case on the floor. Suddenly, Gina Lestrade arrives saying that's hers and she takes it wherever she goes. She's also mad that Scotland Yard is calling Tobias Gregson the real Death Bringer, she found a notebook in his office and managed to look at it before it was taken away. It was a list of Grim Reaper investigations and the names of all the killed defendants with their death dates. The last entry was October thirty-first, the day before this incident, Lestrade can't remember the name but it and wasn't English, Ann Sasha also appeared multiple times. Now regarding Lestrade's own investigation with Toby, the police are trying to retrace Gregson's footsteps, but the two found something but aren't telling. The "hellhound's" skills are highly praised here, Naruhodō decides to let Toby sniff the red wig Gregson was wearing. But suddenly, the dog launched himself straight at Lestrade and goes to her trunk, it did belong to Gregson. It took a long time though, but Lestrade admits that Toby attacked "Sandwich" when he sniffed Gregson's coat, he was hiding the trunk behind his sign board, he picked it from the crime scene. "Sandwich" thought he could sell it for good money, that's all he did but he still got on Lestrade's nerve. She managed to get it back, Naruhodō asks if they can look at it but Toby suddenly starts licking his face crazy!
"Holmes' Deduction"

Ryūnosuke Naruhodō wakes up in his consultation office, Susato Mikotoba and Sherlock Holmes are relieved that he's alright. He has a bandage around his head, it's a sugary water compress from Yūjin since they didn't have ice. Holmes invites them all for tea now and they head downstairs.
When they arrive they see a sad and quiet Iris Watson, a masked man on the couch and her German music. Holmes demands the man to stop singing and explain himself. The detective thinks he knows what happened here, there was a long awaited reunion and Iris is hiding something. Iris goes pale, Holmes concludes that his logic will end this song.
Sherlock Holmes says this man is German because of his singing. He says Iris knows why he is so cheerful, she gazes towards the tea cup so Holmes concludes that she gave the German gentleman some herbal tea that caused him to pass out and sing. But who is he? Holmes reveals that several years ago, a German gentleman visited him to solve his problems. His name was Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigmond van Ormstein, father of Gotts and the king of Germany! He wore a mask to hide his identity and it's the same one he's wearing now. Now regarding Iris, she glances at her backpack so Holmes says something must be inside of it. He says the king gave her pocket money to keep a secret. Iris glances at the handle of Holmes' favorite coffee cup, he says the German king smashed it. The truth is that Iris tried to hide the broken cup, Holmes plans to send a bill to Germany. The deduction is done, but Susato notes that the "German king" hasn't moved at all. Naruhodō also notes that Iris is still not talking, he adds that he actually read the story about case Holmes solved and Gotts' father was the king of Bohemia, not Germany. Susato decides to help Naruhodō correct Holmes' deductions.
Iris was actually looking the gramophone, that's where the German music was coming from. The gentleman is completely unconscious, the record finishes playing but Holmes doesn't know why he owns it. Naruhodō and Susato remember that this mask is the same one Kazuma Asōgi was wearing when he was the Masked Disciple. It used to be sitting on the metal box, but why is the gentleman wearing now it? Holmes removes it and the man is Yūjin Mikotoba, Susato's father. Moving on towards Iris' silence, she was actually glancing at the metal box which appears to be unlocked, it contains all the original stories of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes opens it but then gets punched by a boxing glove after Iris warns him, he's now in the exact same position as Yūjin! Iris is talking now, she is holding a key behind he back, it was originally in her mouth before Holmes got punched. So Yūjin tried to open the box but was sent flying, all the stuff on him miraculously came from onto the box to onto him. The deductions seem to be over but Holmes objects as Iris is still hiding something. Underneath the tray she is holding a record from Scotland Yard, Naruhodō remembers that the autopsy of Klimt van Zieks was missing. A couple years ago, Holmes visited the lab with Iris to see the document, she suddenly starts crying and apologizing.
"The Real Partner of Sherlock Holmes"
Iris Watson admits she took the autopsy report because she knew it was important, she says she found her father when she saw the handwriting on the record. But before she can clarify, Sherlock Holmes announces that he will take the unconscious Yūjin Mikotoba in the attic bed, the orientals wonder if he left on purpose. Anyway, Iris knows that her father was the partner of Holmes and he wrote all the their solved cases in that trunk. When she secretly looked at the case files they said he was a medical doctor, so she studied hard and became one as well. Yet, the name of her father wasn't anywhere in the records. When she found Klimt's autopsy report, she noticed that the handwriting actually matches the records. But she couldn't borrow the report to properly compare the two, and she never said it again until today when she stole it. The coroner who performed Klimt's procedure was John H. Watson, so she took the same last name and decided to write "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Holmes comes in blaming himself for what Iris had done, he promised he'd only tell about her father when the time was right. The both go to return the report to Dr. Goulloyne and apologize, so Susato and Naruhodō decide to borrow it for a while.

This is the clue that detective Gregson, who insisted on having the autopsy performed, was talking about. *Additionally, there was not a single other wound anywhere inside the body. After Iris leaves to tend her herbs, Susato reads the report and is very shocked. She says that the handwriting isn't Dr. Watson's but her father, Yūjin Mikotoba! She reveals that medical assistants like him record their opinions during autopsies and compile it into the report, it's finished when the coroner signs off on it. So Iris made a mistake, John Watson only signed the report. Naruhodō realizes that they don't know which of Holmes' stories are true, the detective says his best friend recorded all his activities. But Holmes doesn't get to see him much due to being in a faraway country, Naruhodō says that the partner of Sherlock Holmes is Dr. Mikotoba. Holmes is glad he finally understands logic, Yūjin suddenly appears and Holmes properly introduces him to them.
Susato Mikotoba is utterly shocked, Yūjin never thought Holmes would be a world famous detective. Their meeting was sixteen years ago, Yūjin was looking for a lodging to commute to the hospital from. But the prices were high, so he decided he needed a roommate to split the rent with. Holmes was still a novice at the time, he was at the hospital doing research. After that, they pursue numerous cases together, it all stopped because of the Professor. Yūjin had to return to Japan with Seishirou Jigoku. Susato is proud of his father for being Holmes' partner, but she asks about Iris' father. Holmes told her that her father was the one who wrote the records in the trunk, that means that Iris and Susato are half-sisters! Susato is disgusted that Yūjin had an affair with Iris' mother, but Yūjin says she's got the wrong idea. Holmes suddenly says they need to head out to solve a case like the old days, reluctantly Yūjin agrees to go with him. He will be praying Naruhodō good luck and his decision about coming back to Japan. A lot of things happened today, but they will soon learn that there will be a clue to behind everything, and it might've been necessary to strengthen Ryūnosuke Naruhodō's resolve...

This is the fourth case in the Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken duology not to have a jury, the first being The Adventure of the Great Departure, the third being The Adventure of the Blossoming Attorney and the fifth being The Resolve of Naruhodō Ryūnosuke.
