Wagahai was Soseki Natsume's pet calico cat. She lived at Natsume's Briar Road lodgings while he was studying in London. After Natsume returned to Japan, she was moved to 221B Baker Street, with Iris Wilson as her caretaker.
Name[]
- "Wagahai" comes from "Wagahai wa Neko de Aru" (吾輩は猫である), the original Japanese title of the novel I Am a Cat by the real-life Soseki Natsume. "Wagahai" itself is a very haughty first-person pronoun in Japanese, as the novel is a satirical story about Japanese society during the Meiji period written from the point of view of a supercilious house cat.
Sex[]
Wagahai is referred to as a male cat during The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story, but gives birth during the end credits, as stated by Natsume after trying to smuggle them to Japan while onboard the SS Burya. The X chromosome is linked to the genetic determination of a calico cat's coat colors, with one color linked to the maternal X chromosome and the other linked to the paternal X chromosome. Male calico cats are invariably the result of genetic syndromes such as Klinefelter syndrome, which results in a male with two X chromosomes and, in most cases, sterility. Other anomalies can also result in a male calico, such as genetic chimerism or a spontaneous mutation of the skin cells of a developing kitten, but these are very rare.
