You can't tell by looking at you, but you're a really nice guy with a love of kids.

Will Powers is an actor best known for playing the titular role in The Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo. He was the defendant in the murder of co-star Jack Hammer, being Wright's first client since taking charge of Wright & Co. Law Offices. He was also a witness for the murder of Juan Corrida.

Um, maybe I shouldn't be saying this... But he definitely did it. Murder. At least once. Maybe twice.

Powers's first role was that of the Steel Samurai. When starting his career in show business, he looked up to Jack Hammer, who played the Steel Samurai's adversary, as a role model.

One day, Powers and Hammer were practicing an action scene runthrough with the director of the show, Sal Manella, while the security guard Wendy Oldbag watched on. During the rehearsal, Powers tripped and fell, mildly spraining his left ankle and breaking the Samurai Spear, a prop that was the signature weapon of the Steel Samurai on the show. Oldbag proceeded to fix the spear with duct tape. Later, in the employee area, the staff present that day (aside from Manella and the producer Dee Vasquez) had a T-bone steak for lunch. Hammer said that he was going to Studio One and left. However, no one saw him actually go to the studio.

In reality, Hammer despised Powers for being the Steel Samurai, since the kids loved him and despised the Evil Magistrate, which was Hammer's role. Because of this, he drugged Powers's lunch with sleeping pills. The plan succeeded; Powers was feeling sleepy, and went to take a nap in his dressing room. Hammer then proceeded to take Powers's Steel Samurai costume and pretended to be him by dragging his left ankle to fool the security cameras and Oldbag. His plan was to frame Powers for the events that would take place.

As the Steel Samurai, Hammer went to Studio Two to confront and kill Dee Vasquez, who had taken advantage of Hammer for many years. However, Vasquez pushed Hammer off the railing and onto a spiked fence post in self-defense, killing him. These events were witnessed by a fanboy. Afterwards, Vasquez enlisted the help of Manella. Together, they burned the Steel Samurai costume in a nearby incinerator and carried Hammer's body via studio van to Studio One. They then changed Hammer into his Evil Magistrate costume.

Two and a half hours later, Powers woke up from his nap. He rushed over to Studio One, only to find the rehearsal canceled. The staff and members of the police were around the body of Jack Hammer. Oldbag saw Powers, and immediately accused him of the crime. The police arrested him on the spot. In need of an attorney, Powers called the Wright & Co. Law Offices and asked Phoenix Wright to defend him, which he agreed to. After three days in court, Wright proved Powers's innocence, and the actor was eternally grateful.

After the last episode of the show was filmed, Powers proceeded to star in The Pink Princess: Warrior of Little Olde Tokyo.

At the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix.

The Pink Princess ran for a year, and Powers began to star on a children's exercise show while wearing a rabbit mask over his face. One month after the show wrapped up, the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix awards ceremony took place at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel. Seeing that it was an extravagant celebration, Powers decided to invite Wright, Maya Fey, and her cousin, Pearl Fey, to the after-party as a way of thanking Wright for defending him previously. Before they arrived, Powers went to give Matt Engarde, the star of The Nickel Samurai, his congratulations. However, he saw Engarde talking to a bellboy, the latter receiving a large amount of cash. Powers then caught a glimpse of the man's face, which was covered with stitches. Since Engarde showed no indication of stopping the conversation anytime soon, Powers left so he wouldn't keep his guests waiting. Later, Powers went to the bathroom, but noticed on his way that the bellboy from before was handing over something to the person inside Engarde's room. He then went back to his seat.

Powers and his guests proceeded to the hotel lobby to see the post-ceremony show and the press conference afterwards, only to find it canceled by order of the police. Worried, the group began to go back when they were stopped by the security guard, who turned out to be none other than Wendy Oldbag. Powers had to stay with Oldbag while Wright, Maya, and Pearl investigated. While they were away, the same bellboy Powers saw with Engarde delivered a radio transceiver, saying it was for Wright.

When Wright and Pearl came back, and Powers delievered the transceiver. When he learned that Juan Corrida had been killed and Engarde was the suspect, he noted how it was just like last year. Just then, the transceiver rang. The person on the other end told them that Maya had been kidnapped and that to get her back unharmed, Wright had to get a complete acquittal for Engarde. The call was then disconnected. Powers suggested that they tell the police, but Wright knew that the kidnapper, would kill Maya should the police get involved. Pearl then told Wright to talk to detective Dick Gumshoe, to which Wright agreed. Powers was not allowed to leave the hotel that night by order of the police.

The next day, Powers met Wright and Pearl during their investigation. He gave them some gossip, which turned out to be quite useful. The rumor was that Corrida was intimately involved with Adrian Andrews, Engarde's manager.

The following night, Powers was finally going home when he was stopped by a police officer, who said his "whole figure" was suspicious-looking. After the police talked to him, they realized that he was an important witness, and so he appeared the next day in court, where they all learned that the bellboy was, in fact, Shelly de Killer, a professional assassin. Wright was aware that Engarde was actually guilty, but he used Powers's testimony to drag the trial out further, allowing Gumshoe to get some important evidence and Franziska von Karma to deliver it to court. With this vital evidence, Wright pulled off getting Engarde convicted and freeing Maya at the same time.

After the trial, Powers, along with Wright, Maya, Pearl, Miles Edgeworth, Lotta Hart, and Gumshoe, ate a "feast" to celebrate the trial's outcome and Maya's freedom.

A year later, Powers landed the costumed role of Moozilla for the Global Studios film The Mighty Moozilla vs. Gourdy, in which the cow monster would be fighting the mythical Gourdy of Gourd Lake. He worked with Penny Nichols, John Marsh, and others at a temporary film lot beside Grand Tower. On April 6, Di-Jun Huang was found murdered at the film lot. Later, Powers saw Marsh leaving the film lot and entering the nearby studio trailer, only to disappear. Powers looked inside the trailer and found that a box had been stolen. Powers later helped Miles Edgeworth and Shi-Long Lang, who were trying to find Marsh and investigate the murder. The murder, although eventually solved, provided unexpected publicity for the movie, but the media mistakenly reported Powers as the "monster" behind the crime.

Personality[]

Phoenix Wright
His face is a bit intimidating, so he's got hard luck in showbiz.

Powers' imposing figure belies his gentle and somewhat naïve nature; he looks like a fierce beast, but actually has a heart of gold. He is extremely sensitive about the way he looks, has a weakness for celebrity gossip, and developed a crush on Adrian Andrews. Powers enjoys working with children, and making them happy, but always has to wear a mask in his acting roles so that he would not have to show his face in public and "ruin kids' dreams". Despite his friendly and kind-hearted nature, he does have a tendency to be a bit of a pessimist.

Name[]

  • Japanese - Saburō Niboshi (荷星 三郎):
    • "Niboshi" comes from a word of the same name, Niboshi (煮干し), which are dried baby sardines, similar to anchovies. Apparently the kanji were picked from the idea that: "Even though something is small (like a sardine), it can still have the dream of being a star".
  • English - Will Powers:
    • His full English name is a play on the word "willpower".
  • French - Gustavo Lonté:
    • His full name is a play on "gustar", Spanish for "to please/to be pleasing" and "volonté", French for "will" (to match his English name).

Unofficial[]

  • Brazilian Portuguese - Liam Ferraz: [1]
    • "Liam" is a variation of William, which means "the courageous protector". It relates to the notion of "willpower".
    • "Ferraz" is of Spanish origin, derived from the Latin ferrum, which literally means "iron".
    • The union of the two names brings the meaning of "vontade de ferro" (iron will), following the name in English (willpower). Also, phonetically it resembles "leão feroz" (ferocious lion), in reference to his leonine appearance.

Appearance[]

Powers has spiky brown hair and brown eyes. He wears an orange and yellow sports-suit, one with a ruffled collar and another with a hood. His formal attire is an orange and yellow suit with a white dress shirt and red bowtie.
