William Rutter Dawes was a British astronomer, who lived during the 19th century. At some point he discovered a new comet with a telescope, and was considered for the award for the "first man" to achieve this. However, King Christian VIII of Denmark eventually reconsidered, and instead awarded it to an American woman called Maria Mitchell.
